Section 1194.21 Software Applications and Operating Systems

* Refer to ( ) for details on the guidelines listed below.
Criteria / Supporting Features / Remarks and explanations
(a) When software is designed to run on a system that has a keyboard, product functions shall be executable from a keyboard where the function itself or the result of performing a function can be discerned textually. / Some Support / Some menu items have keyboard short-cut equivalents, but not all of them. The main toolbar button functions cannot be invoked with the keyboard, nor can most Workbook display functions.
(b) Applications shall not disrupt or disable activated features of other products that are identified as accessibility features, where those features are developed and documented according to industry standards. Applications also shall not disrupt or disable activated features of any operating system that are identified as accessibility features where the application programming interface for those accessibility features has been documented by the manufacturer of the operating system and is available to the product developer. / Supported / Capstone does not disrupt or disable any accessibility features provided by the operating system or other products.
(c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that Assistive Technology can track focus and focus changes. / Some Support / Capstone provides some focus indication in the main user interface, displays and property dialogs. User interface elements other than the Workbook displays are exposed programmatically to Assistive Technology. Capstone uses system dialogs for opening, saving or printing experiments, which fully support the criteria.
(d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to Assistive Technology. When an image represents a program element, the information conveyed by the image must also be available in text. / Some Support / All toolbar buttons have tooltip descriptions of their functions. Property dialogs have textual property names and detailed descriptions of their function. Property dialogs and toolbar buttons have state and function that are recognizable. Many user interface buttons have both image and text. Identify, operation and state of most user interface elements are available to Assistive Technology.
(e) When bitmap images are used to identify controls, status indicators, or other programmatic elements, the meaning assigned to those images shall be consistent throughout an application's performance. / Supported / Where the function is equivalent in the user interface, the same bitmap image is used to reflect that.
(f) Textual information shall be provided through operating system functions for displaying text. The minimum information that shall be made available is text content, text input caret location, and text attributes. / Some Support / Capstoneutilizes3rd Party user interface libraries for text display and text entry. Text content is available in the main user interface, including all dialogs. Textual information is not available, however for Workbook display items like Graphs, Tables and Text boxes.
(g) Applications shall not override user selected contrast and color selections and other individual display attributes. / Some Support / Capstone has a custom user interface appearance to provide consistency across all platforms. As a result, high contrast user settings for window attributes are not honored. However, the primary application user interface supports Large Fonts user settings. Workbook display font sizes can be controlled via Workbook or Application preferences.
(h) When animation is displayed, the information shall be displayable in at least one non-animated presentation mode at the option of the user. / Some Support / While Capstone does not make extensive use of animation, the two main areas do not offer the user control over whether the animation occurs. The animations are brief, though, and not essential for the use of the program.
(i) Color coding shall not be used as the only means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element. / Some Support / There are data symbols along with color that help identify a run of data in an experiment. Runs displayed in a Graph display are primarily distinguished by run color, but there are line thickness options that could also be used to help distinguish between them.
(j) When a product permits a user to adjust color and contrast settings, a variety of color selections capable of producing a range of contrast levels shall be provided. / Some Support / The user can change the run color to any color available on the system. Additionally, the user can change the background colors of Workbook displays and the text color on some of them.
(k) Software shall not use flashing or blinking text, objects, or other elements having a flash or blink frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. / Supported / Capstone alerts users to certain tools by flashing at a rate of 1 Hz.
(l) When electronic forms are used, the form shall allow people using Assistive Technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues. / Some Support / Most dialog user interface elements support Assistive Technology.

Section 1194.31 Functional performance criteria

Criteria / Supporting Features / Remarks and explanations
(a) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require user vision shall be provided, or support for assistive technology used by people who are blind or visually impaired shall be provided. / Limited Support / Some portions of the Capstone user interface support the use of assistive technologies such as narration, but data displays do not. Data can be exported as CSV to a program that provides this capability.
(b) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require visual acuity greater than 20/70 shall be provided in audio and enlarged print output working together or independently, or support for assistive technology used by people who are visually impaired shall be provided. / Supported / Standard assistive technologies that magnify the text and icons will work with Capstone.
(c) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require user hearing shall be provided, or support for assistive technology used by people who are deaf or hard of hearing shall be provided. / Supported / Capstone does not rely on audiooutput in the use of the program.
(d) Where audio information is important for the use of a product, at least one mode of operation and information retrieval shall be provided in an enhanced auditory fashion, or support for assistive hearing devices shall be provided. / Supported / Capstone does not rely on audio output in the use of the program.
(e) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require user speech shall be provided, or support for assistive technology used by people with disabilities shall be provided. / Supported / Capstone does not use or rely on user speech in the use of the program.
(f) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does not require fine motor control or simultaneous actions and that is operable with limited reach and strength shall be provided. / Supported / Standard assistive technologies that provide a substitute for a mouse and are allowed by the operating system will work with Capstone.

Section 1194.41 Information, documentation, and support.

Criteria / Supporting Features / Remarks and explanations
(a) Product support documentation provided to end-users shall be made available in alternate formats upon request, at no additional charge. / Supported / Help documentation for Capstone can be provided in PDF format, which can be viewed using assistive technologies.
(b) End-users shall have access to a description of the accessibility and compatibility features of products in alternate formats or alternate methods upon request, at no additional charge. / Supported / Compliance of Capstone with Section 1194 can be provided upon request.
(c) Support services for products shall accommodate the communication needs of end-users with disabilities.

1-800-772-8700 ext 1004 / Supported / One method of support for Capstone is e-mail. Assistive technologies for e-mail programs by the end-user can be utilized.
