Primary Care Clinical Fellowship

Canterbury Christ Church University is pleased to announce the launch of a Primary Care Fellowship in General Practice.

The delivery of health and social care is undergoing a period of significant change to realise the vision described in the Five Year Forward View and The Primary Care Commission’s Report “The Future of primary care: Creating teams for tomorrow”.

To realise this vision of team based, integrated care with increased emphasis on health promotion and building patient self-efficacy requires health professionals with the necessary clinical, leadership and educational skills to enable this system change. Both NHS England and Health Education England have declared their ambition to develop such system leaders through GP post CCT Clinical Fellowships in the General Practice Forward View.

To this end, Canterbury Christ Church University is pleased to announce the launch of a Primary Care Fellowship in General Practice.

Recruitment to the programme of study will enable a post CCT GP, registered as an independent practitioner on the National Performers List,to develop a special interest in education and research related to the education and training of the GP and primary care workforce.

Fellowship Aims

The academic qualification undertaken by during the Fellowship will be an MSc in Health and Wellbeing (with the possibility of a themed award in General Practice).

The overarching aims of the programme independent of the individual award are:

  • To enhance the function of Primary Care professionals within the community care setting
  • To develop and demonstrate high level research capability skills
  • To develop and demonstrate high level skills in leadership and management
  • To have successfully completed an MSc in Health and Wellbeing

To complete an impact driven project related to the broad themes of

  • Integrated Care
  • Delivery of health care through new models of care
  • Health Promotion
  • Enabling patient efficacy

Learning Outcomes

  1. To develop innovative ideas / share best practice in relation to the shaping of the future primary / community care health care workforce.
  2. To enhance the delivery of population based health care
  3. To enhance the development of primary / community care research
  4. To successfully complete individual study leading to a master’s / MPhil study
  5. To have successfully developed and delivered a 12-month project leading to measurable positive impact on primary care / community health care service delivery.

To support the development of the programme Fellows will be expected to:

  • Work with their employer / partnership to encourage development and uptake of similar initiatives at scale (regionally / nationally)
  • Develop and implement an enhanced service pertinent to the needs of the local healthcare economy
  • Develop ways in which primary care services may respond differently to population and specific patient groups through place based, integrated care approaches
  • Establish a working relationship with educational networks within their health economy including Community Education Provider Networks, programmes for medical NHS professionals at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level and across health care organisations
  • Work with the commissioners of health services including health and social care services to enable the workforce transformation necessary for the delivery of such services
  • Work with community based / social services to enhance the realisation of an integrated healt / social care approach
  • Share their own educational, research and primary care skills
  • Learn / enhance practical skills and interventions within specific relevant areas of clinical practice
  • Develop multi-professional learning opportunities across primary and secondary care.

Programme

During the duration of the 12 month Fellowship the Fellow will undertake an integrated programme of clinical activities and academic study with a weekly commitment of:

  • 6 sessions per week in clinical practice setting
  • 4 sessions per week within the academic setting or engaged in project work

The week is constructed in this manner to encourage the Fellow to develop cross-practice thinking and innovative strategic planning and operational processes - capable of bridging the gap between primary care and academia.

Applicants for the Fellowship may work less than full time. Where this is the case the balance of clinical and academic work will mirror that described above and the duration of the programme will be equivalent to 12 months full time.

Applicants for the scheme may anticipate a competitive interview process.

E. Remuneration

The Fellow will be a partner / employed by their host organisation.

The Bursary provided will support:

  • Tuition Fees for the registration of the Award
  • Support for the Fellow to enable them to be fully able to engage in the 4 sessions / week of the academic programme. This may entail personalised / practice based support

The Bursary will be for the sum of a maximum of £40,000 – this will fund tuition fees and backfill to release a GP for 4 sessions per week.

Fellowship Mentoring

Fellows will have an academic mentor appointed to support them throughout the programme from the University of Canterbury Christchurch.

Fellows will need to be assured of and able to demonstrate support from their partnership / employing organisation.

A mandatory review with respect to progression through the academic component of the programme will be conducted through the University at the 6-month mark and again at the conclusion of the Fellowship. Ad hoc progress reviews will be conducted where appropriate. Fellows will be expected to cooperate fully with all reasonable requests, in relation to appraisal and review meetings.

Fellows will be expected to produce an appropriate portfolio of learning, including quality improvement activity, which will complement their academic studies. Fellows will be encouraged to contribute to academic journals and other means of disseminating learning from the programme.

Fellowship Evaluation

Fellows will be expected to contribute to any evaluation processes for the Fellowship programme, as and when reasonably required.

Professional Conduct

Fellows will be expected toensure that suitably high standards are maintained at all times. They are required to maintain their professional development as a clinician and meet all requirements for NHS appraisal and revalidation.

Fellows will be expected to adhere to the Principles of Good Practice and all such codes of conduct required by regulatory bodies including the GMC and CQC.

Fellows will have a responsibility for confidentiality and data quality: as such they are accountable for the quality and use of data of data both in their clinical and academic practice.

The Fellow will be required to advise the University / HEKSS School of General Practice of any issue that causes concern to be expressed about their clinical standards. The University / HEKSS School of General Practice may .deem, on review that the Academic Fellow be released from the programme of study.
