Student’s Name:

Assessment Task

Design Brief

You have been given the important, although fun task, of organising a child’s celebration party for 10 friends. The party may celebrate a birthday or any other special occasion such as Easter, Halloween, Cricket Grand final, Christmas, etc. The child must be aged between 3 and 12years. It is your responsibility to design and prepare some cupcakes for the party. You will also need to work out the other food you will serve on the day and which games will be played. An invitation will need to be made to send out to guests.

Section 1 – Who is the party for?

  1. You must give an interesting description of the person who is having the celebration.
  2. Include their name, age, gender, interests and/or hobbies, favourite foods and colours, and general personality. Explain why you have chosen the particular theme for their party. This will be about ½ page description.
  3. Include a photo of the child.

Section 2 – The invitation

You must design an original invitation and include one invitation in your assignment (hard copy).

The invitation must include the following information:

  • The date of the celebration
  • Time of the celebration
  • Address of the party
  • RSVP details
  • The name of the person having the party
  • Any other relevant information

The invitation must reflect the theme of the celebration. You may not use a commercial template. What about thinking of producing a 3D one?

Section 3 – The celebration cupcakes

Once you have decided on a theme, you must provide three different designs of cupcakes that you are considering for your theme.

  • Each design must be annotated, telling me the colours and type of icing used, the lollies or icing shapes that you intend to use for decorating. Make sure you colour inand annotate your designs.
  • You must give an explanation as to why you considered each cupcake design, and importantly, why it would be suitable for the person you are making it for, considering their age and gender and THEME of the party.
  • You must choose one of these designs as your final design, and give an explanation as to why you chose your final design over the others.

Section 4 – The party food and games

You must provide recipes for at least three (3) party foods that are suitable for the age group of the person who is having the celebration (not more cupcakes).

  • You must provide one sweet food, one savoury food and one healthy food (can be sweet or savoury).

Try and make the food reflect your party theme. List any alterations you would need to do to the recipe to achieve this.

  • You will need include ONE party game that is suitable for the age group of the person who is having the celebration and will engage the guests. You need to give an explanation of the rules and prizes if any are to be given. These games must reflect the theme (or modified to reflect the theme).

Section 5 – The time plan

  • You must complete a Time Plan for the making of the Cupcakes. This needs to be completed INVIDIDUALLY.
  • Plain Butter Cake recipe will be used for your cupcakes (use the Plain Butter cake recipe from your workbooks, but make the necessary changes for them to be cupcakes). There is a blank Time Plan attached to this Folio.
  • You will need to hand up your time plan BEFORE the cupcake prac lesson (this needs to be handed up as a hard copy in a plastic pocket to your teacher).

Section 6 – The celebration cupcake (Prac)

  • You will make the cupcakes in class, which will then be frozen or kept for the next lesson. If you are absent for the prac, you will need to make 6 cupcakes at home and bring them in the following lesson to decorate. You may not purchase them!
  • You will decorate the cupcakes in the following lesson, which will then be photographed. The icing will be provided, but you will need to bring in your own lollies etc. that you would like to use to decorate your cupcakes. You may have to make your icing figures at home so they can harden in time to use.
  • You must bring a container to school to take your cupcakes home.
  • After you have decorated the cupcakes, you will evaluate your cupcakes and do a reflection of the assignment.

Section 7 – Evaluation

Include an image of YOUR cupcakes in your assignment. Answer the following questions:

  1. Did your decorated cupcakes look the same, or VERY close, to your final design?
  2. List any differences between your final design and your produced cupcakes.
  3. If your cupcakes looked different from your final design, explain the reasons for your changes in detail.
  4. If you were to complete the cupcakes again what changes would you make to the ingredients that you used, including the decorations and type of icing that you used?
  5. If you were to complete the cupcake assignment again are there any other changes you would make, such as time management, planning, etc. (both in the theory work and prac)

Requirement Checklist

  • You will need to decide on a theme for the party and decide who the party will be for.
  • The majority of your assignment must be presented in a digital format (power point, word etc...) to be submitted through the DropBox.
  • All design options for the cupcakes must be in colour, annotated and completed by hand (these will be handed up separately in a plastic pocket).
  • Your invitation must be handed up separately.
  • You will cook your cupcakes at school in one prac lesson, and then you will decorate your cupcakes at school in the following lesson.
  • You are required to provide all the lollies if needed for your cupcakes.
  • The time plan and design sheets are on a separate document which will be given to you.
