SECTION 081416 - FLUSH WOOD DOORS

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

This Section uses the term "Architect."Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

Verify that Section titles referenced in this Section are correct for this Project's Specifications; Section titles may have changed.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

1.3PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

1.4ACTION SUBMITTALS

Consider deleting first two subparagraphs below if retaining corner-section Samples.

  1. Factory finishes applied to actual door face materials, approximately 8 by 10 inches (200 by 250 mm), for each material and finish.[ For each wood species and transparent finish, provide set of three Samples showing typical range of color and grain to be expected in finished Work.]
  2. Plastic laminate, 2 inches by 3 inches (50 mm by 75 mm)rectangular, for each color, texture, and pattern selected.
  3. Corner sections of doors, approximately 8 by 10 inches (200 by 250 mm), with door faces and edges representing actual materials to be used.
  4. Provide Samples for each species of veneer and solid lumber required.
  5. Provide Samples for each color, texture, and pattern of plastic laminate required.
  6. Finish veneer-faced door Samples with same materials proposed for factory-finished doors.
  7. Louver blade and frame sections, 6 inches (150 mm) long, for each material and finish specified.
  8. Frames for light openings, 6 inches (150 mm) long, for each material, type, and finish required.

1.5INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

  1. Sample Warranty:For special warranty.

1.6QUALITY ASSURANCE

Retain "Manufacturer Qualifications" and "Vendor Qualifications" paragraphs below if required for LEED.

  1. Manufacturer Qualifications:A qualified manufacturer that is certified for chain of custody by an FSC-accredited certification body when FSC certified wood is specified.

Chain-of-custody certification is not required for subcontractors (entities that install products) but is required for vendors unless they are simply acting as an agent of manufacturer and the sale is actually between manufacturer and Contractor or subcontractor.

  1. Vendor Qualifications:A vendor that is certified for chain of custody by an FSC-accredited certification body when FSC wood is specified.

1.7DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Comply with requirements of referenced standard and manufacturer's written instructions.

Retain first paragraph below for factory-finished doors and high-quality unfinished doors.Second option is standard with some manufacturers, extra with others.

  1. Package factory finished wood veneer doors individually in plastic bags or cardboard cartons.
  2. Package raw (unfinished) wood veneer doors and plastic laminate faced doors with factory standard paper or cardboard slip sheets between each individual door leaf.
  3. Mark each door on the top rail with the opening number, door handling, and door construction, including face veneer type used on Shop Drawings. Do not apply any information to the bottom rail.

1.8FIELD CONDITIONS

Retain first "Environmental Limitations" Paragraph below if humidity is not controlled during occupancy.

  1. Environmental Limitations:Do not deliver or install doors until spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during remainder of construction period.

Retain "Environmental Limitations" Paragraph below if humidity is controlled during occupancy, and retain one of three relative humidity ranges or insert another based on local climatological data.First applies to Ontario, Quebec, and most of U.S.Second applies to damp coastal areas of southern U.S. and the Maritime Provinces.Third applies to dry southwestern U.S. and to Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.For unfinished woodwork, narrower ranges will be required to maintain optimum moisture content.See map and discussion about relative humidity and moisture content in AWI's, AWMAC's, and WI's "Architectural Woodwork Standards."

  1. Environmental Limitations:Do not deliver or install doors until spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and HVAC system is operating and maintaining temperature between 60 and 90 degF (16 and 32 degC) and relative humidity between [25 and 55] [43 and 70] [17 and 50] <Insert numbers> percent during remainder of construction period.

1.9WARRANTY

See Evaluations for door warranties.

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that special warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

  1. Special Warranty:Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace doors that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
  2. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
  3. Warping (bow, cup, or twist) more than 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) in a 42-by-84-inch (1067-by-2134-mm) section of a 1.75 inch(44.5 mm) thick door.
  4. Telegraphing of core construction in face veneers exceeding 0.01 inch in a 3-inch (0.25 mm in a 76.2-mm) span.

Requirements in first subparagraph below are not standard with many manufacturers and could be an added cost if retained.

  1. Warranty shall also include installation and finishing that may be required due to repair or replacement of defective doors.

Warranties for exterior doors vary from no warranty to a warranty for a period of up to five years.Before retaining "Warranty Period for Solid-Core Exterior Doors" Subparagraph below, verify availability of warranty period with manufacturers; delete if retaining manufacturers that offer no warranty.Standard manufacturer's warranty generally goes into effect on date of shipment, not date of Substantial Completion.

  1. Warranty Period for Solid-Core Exterior Doors:[Two] [Five] <Insert number> years from date of Substantial Completion.

"Warranty Period for Solid-Core Interior Doors" Subparagraph below is typical; revise if required.

  1. Warranty Period for Solid-Core Interior Doors:Life of installation.

Warranties for hollow-core doors vary with manufacturer and type of hollow core.Before retaining "Warranty Period for Hollow-Core Interior Doors" Subparagraph below, verify availability of warranty period with manufacturers.Standard manufacturer's warranties generally go into effect on date of shipment, not date of Substantial Completion.

  1. Warranty Period for Hollow-Core Interior Doors:[One] [Two] <Insert number> year(s) from date of Substantial Completion.

2.2FLUSH WOOD DOORS, GENERAL

  1. Quality Standard:In addition to requirements specified, comply with WDMAI.S.1-A, "Architectural Wood Flush Doors."

Retain first "Regional Materials" Paragraph below for LEED-NC, LEED-CS, or LEED for SchoolsCreditMR5 and LEED-CICreditMR5, Option2; before retaining, verify availability of materials that comply.An alternative method of dealing with these credit requirements is to retain requirement in Section018113.13 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations," Section018113.16 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for Commercial Interiors," or Section018113.19 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for Core and Shell Development" that gives Contractor the option and responsibility to determine how these credit requirements will be met.

  1. Regional Materials:Flush wood doors shall be manufactured within 500 miles (800 km) of Project site from materials that have been extracted, harvested, or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles (800 km) of Project site.

Retain "Regional Materials" Paragraph below for LEED-CICreditMR5, Option1; before retaining, verify availability of materials that comply.

  1. Regional Materials:Flush wood doors shall be manufactured within 500 miles (800 km) of Project site.

Retain "Certified Wood" Paragraph below if doors are required to be certified for LEED.An alternative method of dealing with this credit requirement is to retain requirement in Section018113.13 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations," Section018113.16 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for Commercial Interiors," or Section018113.19 "Sustainable Design Requirements - LEED for Core and Shell Development" that gives Contractor the option and responsibility to determine how the credit requirement will be met.Manufacturers certifying products as "FSC Mixed Credit" do not have to use 100 percent certified wood in the products, but in their total production manufacturers must use an amount equal to or greater than the percentage of their production that is labeled "FSC Mixed Credit."

  1. Certified Wood:Flush wood doors shall be certified as "FSC Mixed Credit"according to FSCSTD-01-001, "FSC Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship," and to FSCSTD-40-004, "FSC Standard for Chain of Custody Certification."

Retain first "Low-Emitting Materials" Paragraph below if required for LEED-NC, LEED-CS, or LEED-CICreditIEQ4.4.Before retaining, verify availability with manufacturers.

  1. Low-Emitting Materials:Fabricate doors with adhesives and composite wood products that do not contain added urea formaldehyde.

Retain "Low-Emitting Materials" Paragraph below if required for LEED for SchoolsCreditIEQ4.1 or CreditIEQ4.4.

  1. Retain one of two "WDMAI.S.1-A Performance Grade" paragraphs below to specify performance grade if referencing WDMAI.S.1-A, or delete both paragraphs and specify performance grades for each door type in "Veneer-Faced Doors for Transparent Finish," "Doors for Opaque Finish," and "Plastic-Laminate-Faced Doors" articles.See Evaluations.
