SECTION 04xx—BITUMINOUS FOG SEAL FORBITUMINOUS SEAL COATS

04xx.1 DESCRIPTION—This work is the treatment of a bituminous seal coat with an application of bituminous material and an optional application of fine aggregate.

04xx.2 MATERIALS—

(a)Bituminous Material. One of the following, as specified in Section 702:

TABLE A

Fog Seal Materials

Application
Temperature (F)
Class of Material(3) / Type of Material / Minimum / Maximum
CSS-1h(1) / Cationic Emulsified Asphalt / 70 / 150
SS-1h(2) / Emulsified Asphalt / 70 / 150
Notes:
Material selection for the Fog Seal application:
  1. Use a Cationic Emulsified Asphalt material CSS-1h when a Cationic Emulsified Asphalt was used for the Bituminous Seal Coat.
  2. Use anAnionic Emulsified Asphalt material SS-1h when an Anionic Emulsified Asphalt was used for the Bituminous Seal Coat.
  3. A polymer modified version of the emulsified asphaltis acceptable.
Dilute Material using 1 part emulsion to 1 part water. All dilution must be done by the bituminous emulsion supplier at the bituminous emulsion supplier plant location.Provide a Bill of Lading from the bituminous emulsion supplier certifying the diluted emulsified asphalt properties. Dilution of asphalt emulsion in the field is not permitted.

(b)Fine Aggregate (Cover Sand). Type A or Type B2, Section 703.1

04xx.3 CONSTRUCTION—Place the fog seal on a bituminous seal coat, constructed as specified in Section 470, or as directed by the Representative. Allow the seal coat to cure a minimum of one day before fog sealing. Place the fog seal application within 1 to 45 days after the last day of the seal coat placement.

(a)Weather Limitations. Apply emulsified asphalt when the air, surface, and aggregate temperatures are above 60F. Do not apply emulsified asphalt if, in the Representative's opinion, rain is imminent or if freezing temperatures are expected within 8 hours after application. The fog seal will normally cure within 2 hours under dry conditions andtemperatures above 60F.

(b)Surface Preparations. The road surface must be clean and dry prior to placing the bituminous fog seal material. Lightly sweep the pavement with a motorized broom. Covermanholes, valve covers, sensors, etc. to prevent adherence of the bituminous material. Remove protective coverings prior to opening the road to traffic.

(c)Fog Seal Application. Apply the bituminous material with a distributor meeting therequirements of Section 460.3(b).Place fog seal on all completed seal coated areas.

Construct a 100-foot test strip. Review the application of diluted (1:1) bituminous material and adjust theapplication rate as needed. Apply between0.07 to 0.18gallons per square yard, diluted. Determine the distributor’sapplication rate in the field according to PTM 747.Apply the fog seal to minimize the amount of overspray. Check shaded areas to ensure the fog seal has cured. Do notallow traffic on the fog seal until it has cured.

(c)Cover Sand Application (Optional). Apply cover sand uniformly over the surface treatment within 5 minutes of applying the fog seal. The cover sand application rate is 2 to 5 pounds per square yard. Lightly cover remaining spots of excess asphalt with blotter, before opening to traffic.Sweep the pavement with a motorized broomprior to opening to traffic.

(d)Pavement Markings. Interim pavement markings can be placed after the fog sealcures. Do not place permanent pavement markings on the fog seal until three days after the last day of fog seal placement.
