1.5QUALITY ASSURANCE

SPEC WRITER NOTE: For small projects verify use of following paragraph with the project manager.

  1. Mockups:
  2. Before starting masonry, build a mockup panel minimum 1800 mm by 1800mm (6 feet by 6feet) with 600mm (24inch) 90 degree return for outside corner.
  3. Use masonry units from random cubes of units delivered on site.
  4. Include structural backup, reinforcing, ties, and anchors.
  5. Mockup panel approved by Contracting Officer's Representativeset workmanship and aesthetic quality for masonry work.
  6. Clean sample panel to test cleaning methods.
  7. Remove mockup panel when directed by Contracting Officer's Representative.

1.6DELIVERY

  1. Deliver products in manufacturer's original sealed packaging.
  2. Mark packaging, legibly. Indicate manufacturer's name or brand, type, //color,// production run number, and manufacture date.
  3. Before installation, return or dispose of products within distorted, damaged, or opened packaging.

1.7STORAGE AND HANDLING

  1. Store products above grade, protected from contamination.
  2. Protect products from damage during handling and construction operations.

1.8FIELD CONDITIONS

  1. Hot and Cold Weather Requirements: Comply with ACI530.1/ASCE6/TMS602.

1.9WARRANTY

SPEC WRITER NOTE: Always retain construction warranty. FAR includes Contractor's one year labor and material warranty.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1SYSTEM PERFORMANCE

2.3UNIT MASONRY PRODUCTS

  3. Use bullnose concrete masonry units at corners exposed in finished work with 25mm (1inch) minimum radius rounded vertical exterior corners (bullnose units).

2.4ANCHORS, TIES, AND REINFORCEMENT

  1. Steel Reinforcing Bars: ASTMA615/A615M; Grade 60, deformed bars.
  2. Joint Reinforcement:
  3. Form from wire complying with ASTMA951/A951M.
  4. Hot dipped galvanized after fabrication.
  5. Width of joint reinforcement 40mm (1.6inches) less than nominal thickness of masonry wall or partition.
  6. Cross wires welded to longitudinal wires.
  7. Joint reinforcement minimum 3000mm (10feet)long, factory cut.
  8. Joint reinforcement with crimp formed drip is not acceptable.
  9. Maximum spacing of cross wires 400mm (16inch) to longitudinal wires.
  10. Ladder Design:
  11. Longitudinal wires deformed //4mm (0.16inch) // 5mm (0.20inch) diameter wire//.

  13. Trussed Design:

  16. Multiple Wythes and Cavity Wall Ties:
  17. Longitudinal wires 4mm (0.16inch), two in each wythe with ladder truss wires 4mm (0.16inch) overlay, welded to each longitudinal wire.
  18. Longitudinal wires 4mm (0.16inch) with U shape 4mm (0.16inch) rectangular ties extending into other wythe minimum 75mm (3inches) spaced 400 mm on center (16inches). Adjustable type with U shape tie designed to receive 4mm (0.16inch) pintle projecting into other wythe 75mm (3 inches min.).
  19. Adjustable Veneer Anchor for Framed Walls:
  20. Two piece, adjustable anchor and tie.
  21. Anchor and tie may be either loop or angle type; provide only one type throughout.
  22. Loop Type:
  23. Anchor: Screwon galvanized steel anchor strap 2.75mm (0.11inch) by 19mm (3/4inch) wide by 225mm (9inches) long, with 9mm (0.35inch) offset and 100mm (4inch) adjustment. Provide 5mm (0.20inch) hole at each end for fasteners.
  24. Ties: Triangular tie, fabricated of 5mm (0.20inch) diameter galvanized cold drawn steel wire. Ties long enough to engage anchor and be embedded minimum 50mm (2inches) into bed joint of masonry veneer.
  25. Angle Type:
  26. Anchor: Minimum 2mm (16 gage) thick galvanized steel angle shaped anchor strap. Provide hole in vertical leg for fastener. Provide hole near end of outstanding leg to suit upstanding portion of tie.
  27. Tie: Fabricate from 5mm (0.20inch) diameter galvanized cold drawn steel wire. Form "L" shape to be embedded minimum 50mm (2inches) into the bed joint of masonry veneer and provide upstanding leg to fit through hole in anchor and be long enough to allow 50mm (2inches) of vertical adjustment.
  28. Dovetail Anchors:
  29. Corrugated steel dovetail anchors formed of 1.5mm (0.06inch) thick by 25mm (1inch) wide galvanized steel, 90mm (31/2inches) long where used to anchor 100mm (4inch) nominal thick masonry units, 140mm (51/2inches) long for masonry units more than 100mm (4inches) thick.
  30. Triangular wire dovetail anchor 100mm (4inch) wide formed of 4mm (9 gage) steel wire with galvanized steel dovetail insert. Anchor length to extend minimum 75mm (3inches) into masonry, 25mm (1inch) into 40mm (11/2inch) thick units.
  31. Form dovetail anchor slots from 0.6mm (0.02inch) thick galvanized steel (with felt or fiber filler).
  32. Individual Ties:
  33. Rectangular ties: Form from 5mm (3/16inch) diameter galvanized steel rod to rectangular shape minimum 50mm (2inches) wide by sufficient length for ends of ties to extend within 25mm (1inch) of each face of wall. Ties that are crimped to form drip are not acceptable.
  34. Adjustable Cavity Wall Ties:
  35. Adjustable wall ties may be furnished at Contractor's option.
  36. Two piece type permitting up to 40mm (11/2inch) adjustment.
  37. Form ties from 5mm (3/16inch) diameter galvanized steel wire.
  38. Form one piece to rectangular shape 105mm (41/8inches) wide by length required to extend into bed joint 50mm (2inches).
  39. Form other piece to 75mm (3inch) long by 75mm (3inch) wide shape, having 75mm (3inch) long bent section for engaging 105mm (41/8inch) wide piece to form adjustable connection.
  40. Wall Ties, (Mesh or Wire):
  41. Mesh wall ties formed of ASTMA1064/A1064M, W0.5, 2 mm, (0.08inch) galvanized steel wire 13 mm by 13mm (1/2 inch by 1/2inch) mesh, 75mm (3inches) wide by 200mm (8inches) long.
  42. Rectangular wire wall ties formed of W1.4, 3 mm, (0.12inch) galvanized steel wire 50mm (2inches) wide by 200mm (8inches) long.

SPEC WRITER NOTE: Corrugated wall ties are only recommended for use in residential construction.

  1. Corrugated Wall Tie:
  2. Form from 1.5mm (0.06inch) thick corrugated, galvanized steel 30mm (11/4inches) wide by lengths to extend minimum 100mm (4inches) into joints of masonry plus 38mm (11/2inch) turnup.
  3. Provide 5mm (3/16inch) hole in turnup for fastener attachment.
  4. Adjustable Steel Column Anchor:
  5. Two piece anchor consisting of a 6mm (1/4inch) diameter steel rod to be welded to steel with offset ends, rod to permit 100mm (4inch) vertical adjustment of wire anchor.
  6. Triangular shaped wire anchor 100mm (4inches) wide formed from 5 (3/16inch) diameter galvanized wire, to extend minimum 75mm (3inches) into joints of masonry.
  7. Adjustable Steel Beam Anchor:
  8. Z or C type steel strap, 30mm (1 1/4inches) wide, 3mm (1/8inch) thick.
  9. Flange hook minimum 38mm (1 1/2inches) long.
  10. Length to embed in masonry minimum 50mm (2inches) in 100mm (4inch) nominal thick masonry and 100mm (4inches) in thicker masonry.
  11. Bend masonry end minimum 40mm (1 1/2inches).
  12. Ridge Wall Anchors:
  13. Form from galvanized steel minimum 25mm (1inch) wide by 5mm (3/16inch) thick by 600mm (24inches) long, plus 50mm (2inch) bends.
  14. Other lengths as indicated on drawings.

2.5ACCESSORIES

SPEC WRITER NOTE: Use shear keys for control joints in CMU walls.

  1. Shear Keys:
  2. Solid extruded crossshaped section of rubber, neoprene, or polyvinyl chloride, with durometer hardness of approximately 80 when tested according toASTMD2240, and minimum shear strength of 3.5MPa (500psi).
  3. Shear Key Dimensions: Nominal 70 mm by 8mm for long flange and 38 mm by 16 mm for short flange (23/4 inches by 5/16 inch for long flange, and 11/2 inches by 5/8 inch for short flange).
  4. Weeps:
  5. Weep Hole Wicks: Glass fiber ropes, 10mm (3/8inch) minimum diameter, 300mm (12inches) long.
  6. Weep Tubing: Round, polyethylene, 9mm (3/8inch) diameter, 100mm (4inches) long.
  7. Weep Hole: Flexible PVC louvered configuration with rectangular closure strip at top.
  8. Cavity Drain Material: Open mesh polyester sheets or strips to prevent mortar droppings from clogging the cavity.
  9. Preformed Compressible Joint Filler:
  10. Thickness and depth to fill joint.
  11. Closed Cell Neoprene: ASTMD1056, Type 2, Class A, Grade 1, B2F1.
  12. NonCombustible Type: ASTMC612, Type 5, Max. Temp.1800 degrees F.
  13. Box Board:
  14. Mineral Fiber Board: ASTMC612, Type 1.
  15. 25mm (1inch) thickness.
  16. Other spacing material having similar characteristics is acceptable subject to Contracting Officer's Representative's approval.
  17. Masonry Cleaner:
  18. Detergent type cleaner selected for each type masonry.
  19. Acid cleaners are not acceptable.
  20. Use soapless type specially prepared for cleaning brick or concrete masonry as appropriate.
  21. Fasteners:
  22. Concrete Nails: ASTMF1667, Type I, Style 11, 19mm (3/4inch) minimum length.
  23. Masonry Nails: ASTMF1667, Type I, Style 17, 19mm (3/4inch) minimum length.
  24. Screws: FSFFS107, Type A, AB, SF thread forming or cutting.
  25. Welding Materials: AWSD1.4/D1.4M, type to suit application.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1INSTALLATION - GENERAL

  1. Install products according to manufacturer's instructions //and approved submittal drawings//.
  2. When manufacturer's instructions deviate from specifications, submit proposed resolution for Contracting Officer's Representative consideration.
  3. Keep finish work free from mortar smears or spatters, and leave neat and clean.
  4. Wall Openings:
  5. Fill hollow metal frames built into masonry walls and partitions solid with mortar as laying of masonry progresses.
  6. When items are not available when walls are built, prepare openings for subsequent installation.
  7. Tooling Joints:
  8. Do not tool until mortar has stiffened enough to retain thumb print when thumb is pressed against mortar.
  9. Tool while mortar is soft enough to be compressed into joints and not raked out.
  10. Finish joints in exterior face masonry work with jointing tool, and provide smooth, watertight concave joint unless specified otherwise.
  11. Tool Exposed interior joints in finish work concave unless specified otherwise.
  12. Partition Height:
  13. Extend partitions minimum 100mm (4inches) above suspended ceiling or to overhead construction where no ceiling occurs.
  14. Extend following partitions to overhead construction.
  15. Full height partitions, and fire partitions and smoke partitions indicated on drawings.
  16. Both walls at expansion joints.
  17. Corridor walls.
  18. Walls at stairway and stair halls, elevators, dumbwaiters, trash and laundry chute shafts, and other vertical shafts.
  19. Walls at refrigerator space.
  20. Reinforced masonry partitions.
  21. Extend finished masonry partitions minimum100mm (4inches) above suspended ceiling and continue with concrete masonry units or structural clay tile to overhead construction:
  22. Lintels:
  23. Lintels are not required for openings less than 1000mm (40inches) wide that have hollow metal frames.
  24. Openings 1025mm (41inches) wide to 1600m (63inches) wide without structural steel lintel or frames, require lintel formed of concrete masonry lintel or bond beam units //or structural facing tile lintel units// filled with grout and reinforced with one No. 16 (No. 5) rod top and bottom for each 100mm (4inches) of nominal thickness unless shown otherwise.
  25. Precast concrete lintels of 25MPa (3,000psi) concrete, same thickness as partition, and with one No. 16 (No. 5) deformed bar top and bottom for each 100mm (4inches) of nominal thickness, is acceptable in lieu of reinforced CMU masonry lintels.
  26. Use steel lintels, for openings greater than 1600m (63inches) wide, brick masonry openings, and elevator openings unless shown otherwise.
  27. Doors having overhead concealed door closers require steel lintel, and pocket for closer box.
  28. Lintel Bearing Length: Minimum 100mm (4inches) at both ends.
  29. Build masonry openings or arches over wood or metal centering and supports when steel lintels are not used.
  30. Wall, Furring, and Partition Units:
  31. Lay out field units to provide onehalf running bond, unless indicated otherwise.
  32. Align head joints of alternate vertical courses.
  33. At sides of openings, balance head joints in each course on vertical center lines of openings.
  34. Minimum Masonry Unit Length: 100mm (4inches).
  35. On interior partitions provide 6mm (1/4inch) open joint for caulking between //existing construction, // exterior walls, // concrete work,// and abutting masonry partitions.
  36. Use minimum 100mm (4inches) nominal thick masonry for free standing furring, unless indicatedotherwise.
  37. Do not abut existing plastered surfaces except suspended ceilings with new masonry partitions.
  38. Use minimum 100mm (4inches) nominal thick masonry for fireproofing steel columns unless indicated otherwise.
  39. Before connecting new masonry with previously laid masonry, remove loosened masonry or mortar, and clean and wet work in place as specified under wetting.
  40. When new masonry partitions start on existing floors, machine cut existing floor finish material down to concrete surface.

SPEC WRITER NOTE: Check drawings, expansion space may be larger than 25mm (1inch) where differential movement between steel and masonry is greater.
