Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Is 62:1-5 I Cor 12:4-11 Jn 2:1-11 (66)

“There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and His disciples had likewise been invited to the celebration. At a certain point the wine ran out, and Jesus’ mother told him, ‘They have no more wine.’ Jesus replied ‘Woman how does this concern of yours involve me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother instructed those waiting on tables, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’… Jesus performed this first of his signs at Cana… and his disciples believed in him”

The gospel of John, written at the end of the first century, constantly reminds us of a believing people. From Cana to the resurrection account, the encounters and events foster belief in the people whom Jesus met.

Visiting the wedding site we learn off Mary’s concern and Jesus’ conversation concerning ‘His hour’ which will come when He offers His priestly prayer and His time at Gethsemani. Waiters securing water in large quantities, the wine tasting experience and words directed to the groom, complete the story. Perhaps the most significant statement however, comes in the directive of Mary, the last words we find her saying in the gospel ‘Do whatever he tells you.’

Mary, a model disciple, concerned about the needs of the newlyweds, intercedes in their behalf. Her words of wisdom are directed to us as well, as we hear the gospel and decide to live it. It is in the Spirit of Cana and the presence of the Spirit that we are enabled to provide for the common good.

Dear Co-Workers of Life,

It willtake place at the Manhattan Center(34th Street and 8th Avenue) from January 18-20, 2013and this year all the events have been organized around the theme of “Freedom”. This would be a great way toparticipate in building a culture of life.

Specifically, all the presentations, artistic performances, and exhibits at this year’s New York Encounter will probe and answer these vital questions: But what is freedom? What is its origin? What does it have to do with human fulfillment, authority, and power?

The work of a prophet is to speak out, even when the message is difficult to hear. Today’s first reading begins: “For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet.” Prophets were not just for times long past. Two of our most recent prophets will be celebrated in the “radio play,” Thomas Merton & Dorothy Day:Pilgrims and Prophets of Peace. This “exceptional” and “spellbinding” show “brings to life two of the most important and inspiring spiritual teachers of the last century.” Come Sunday afternoon, January 27th, to St. Joseph's Greenwich Village Church, 2:30 PM. Reserve your seats today: $30 each or $25 with a PCMNY 2013 Membership Card Contact: 212-420-0250 or .
