1.0.SUBJECT OF THE INSTRUCTION.

Subject of the instruction is the method of preparing the compound “APEX” for sealing of cable penetrations.

2.0.APPLICATION.

The compound “APEX” is designed for sealing of single and multi-cable penetration in bulkheads and deck of Class A-60.

It is not only fire-resistant but also gas and watertight.

3.0.APPLICATION RANGE.

The compound “APEX” can be used on each type of floating units built and/or repaired under supervision of Classification Societies approving the application of this compound.

4.0.APPLICATION METHOD.

4.1. GENERAL.

4.1.1. Pre-Treatment Of Cable Penetrations.

Before applying the compound “APEX” the cable penetrations are to be coated with marine paints.

4.1.2. Arranging Of The Cables.

To avoid any crossing there are to be put washers between the cables to secure a distance between them of min .5 mm and between the cables and the inner edge of the penetrations there should be a free space of min. 8 mm.

4.1.3.Tightening Of End Faces .

Before starting the sealing process the cable penetrations end faces must be thoroughly tightened by means of:

-durably plastic putty ”APKIT” or

-compound “APEX” being thickened with granulated mineral wool or

-compound “APEX” being thickened with its dry component

4.1.3.1.Preparating Of The Thickened Mass.

For making a thick mass are needed 2 parts by weight of the component “A” (dry) and 1 part of weight of the component “B” (liquid). To the weighed part of liquid component “B” the dry component “A” is to be added portion by portion under continuous stirring and when the mass becomes pasty the stirring is to be stopped and further it is to be kneaded by hands ( in rubber glovers) adding dry component until a consistency of plasticine is obtained . So prepared mass is to be carefully pressed in between the cables to a thickness of about 25 mm.

Open time of this mass about 15-20 min. at 20o C.

After full setting of this about 1 hr at 20o C the cable penetration can be sealed with the appropriate compound “APEX”.

4.2. Preparating Of The Sealing Mass.

The compound “APEX” is delivered in form of two components, i. e.:

-component “A” (dry) – in PE buckets, each containing 9.0 kg

-component “B” ( liquid) – in PE canisters, each containing 8.1 kg

For obtaining a mass the both components are to be mixed together in the given portions under using a hand mixer until receiving a homogenous consistency. Open time of the mass 60 min at 20o C.

4.3. Sealing Of Cable Penetrations.

Sealing of cable penetrations is to be made as follows:

-horizontal penetration – up to upper edge of the filling inlet

-vertical penetration - up to its upper edge

The mass hardens within some hours; the mass settling is associated with heat emission and a volume expansion of about 0.5% in the first 24 hrs.

The sealing mass ought to be put in to the cable penetration in portions not exceed 10 dm3.

5.0.ACCEPTANCE CONDITIONS.

The cable penetrations ought to be thoroughly filled with the sealing mass and its surface should be hard and smooth.

6.0.WORK SAFETY.

While preparing and applying the mass “APEX” the operators have to protect themselves by means of rubber gloves, goggles and dust-mask.

Any possible splashing are to be removed at once mechanically and wiped off with water moistened cloth.
