Inter-Faith Council Annual Events

1. Annual Meeting

TBD, October 2006

From Bylaws: “The Annual Meeting of members shall be held in September or October of each year at such date and time as shall be determined by the President. The Annual Meeting shall be chaired by the President and shall be for the purposes of reporting to the membership and electing the members of the Board of Directors.”

The Annual Meeting includes a free, fully catered meal to all in attendance, as well as discussion about topics of interest and presentation of the Mildred Berkeley Community Service Award.

2. RSVVP

November 14, 2006

“’RSVVP’ stands for ‘Restaurants Sharing 10 Percent’ (The V's are Roman numeral 5's, so V+V=10). Participating restaurants contribute 10% of their total proceeds on that day to benefit the IFC, Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina and the Urban Ministries of Durham Community Kitchen to fight hunger in the Triangle.

Now you have an excuse to go out and eat! Breakfast, lunch or dinner, it doesn't matter. Visit an old favorite, or give a new restaurant a try. Tell your friends and family to not only feed themselves, but feed others in the community at the same time! Read more at

In 2005, we raised a record-breaking $23,500 to help our food programs.

3. Holiday Meals Program

Ongoing in Nov./Dec. 2006

The Holiday Meals Program provides a turkey or ham, stuffing, dessert and all the fixin’s for households who can’t afford to have a meal together during the holidays. We publish “coupons” in the newspapers, website, church bulletins and elsewhere where people can attach $20 to cover the cost of a household’s Holiday Meal.

In 2005, we served Holiday Meals to a record 755 households representing 3,122 people, through $14,937 in donations.

4. IFC Sabbath Weekend

February 2-4, 2007

“IFC SabbathWeekend is a traditional reminder and celebration of the strong partnerships in ministry that the IFC shares with our congregations. During SabbathWeekend observing congregations are mindful about how we all care for one another, especially our neighbors in need.” IFC provides congregations with a liturgy and informational materials to share with congregation members.

In 2007, Chris has suggested congregational leaders switch pulpits for the weekend to show unity in the IFC’s cause amongst the congregations.

5. CROP Walk

April 15, 2007

“CROP WALKS, our community-based fund raising events, raise money for local hunger-fighting agencies as well as the international relief and development efforts of Church World Service.” The IFC hosts the Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Walk and keeps 25% of the proceeds, while the other 75% helps world-hunger relief efforts. The 2007 Walk will be the 21st the IFC has sponsored.

In 2005, we raised a record $62,401 (we kept $15,600), and so far in 2006, we have raised $57,000 so far with more coming in.

6. Brian Clemens Golf Tournament

TBD, Spring 2007?

This Golf Tournament, sponsored by his sister and her husband, has been around for six years to raise money for Community House. Brian Clemens was a client of ours and Community House provided support and shelter at the turning point in Brian's life for which he was always grateful. He passed away at age 31 in 1994.

The tournament is held at The Crossings in Durham, and includes 18 holes of golf, cart fees, dinner, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, and awards to the top three finishers and special contests. Additionally, prizes are awarded for the two longest drives, two closest-to-the-pin contests and three hole-in-one contests. There are also “cheats” to purchase to make the game more fun for everyone.

In 2005, we raised $12,000, and in 2006 we’re expecting $15,000 (though the money hasn’t all come in yet.)
