Special District Association Encourages Support of Federal “Stimulus” Funds for Colorado Infrastructure

Colorado’s Special District Association (SDA) has urged the state’s congressional delegation to include critical infrastructure improvements in any new federal “economic stimulus” program to encourage economic recovery

Nearly 1,600 special districts deliver vital public services to nearly every community in Colorado, including water, sanitation, wastewater and drainage districts, fire protection, emergency services, parks and recreation, hospital and library districts.

SDA Board President Peter Webb and Executive Director J. Evan Goulding delivered a resolution to Senator Ken Salazar and Senator-Elect Mark Udall, encouraging inclusion of special districts in any federal economic stimulus package that would provide funds for critical infrastructure improvement projects in Colorado.

The SDA Board adopted the resolution last week, recognizing that there’s an opportunity to include the improvement and rehabilitation of water and sewer systems and other public facilities in the economic recovery funding.

“There’s a direct public benefit from building these essential elements of every-day life,” said Webb. “They may not be as visible as roads and bridges, but they are just as valuable to the efficient functioning of our society.”

A number of Colorado special districts have significant need for capital improvements and are ready and able to undertake those projects if the proper funding is available. These projects include improvements to important drinking water treatment and distribution systems, wastewater collection and treatment and fire stations. These improvements are important to continue to protect the health and welfare of Colorado communities.

The citizens who reside in Colorado special districts would not only benefit from the improved utility and other public infrastructure and facilities, but funding these projects also results in job creation and economic benefit from successful construction efforts.

Colorado’s seven congressional delegates received the resolution as well and are being contacted by SDA for their support.
