Scuba Diving(continued)Team K

Before You Start

The northern coast of North Carolina is known as a wonderful scuba diving location. More than two dozen World War II ships have sunk in the waters off this coast. Scuba divers explore these waters to see the remains of the vessels and the creatures that live there.

You have booked a two-tank scuba dive to visit shipwrecks from World War II. On a
two-tank dive, divers descend to two different locations, with a rest period back on the boat between sites.

Activity

When you jump from the deck of the chartered boat, you are 5 feet above the ocean’ surface. Use the map above to help solve these problems.

1.Your first dive is at the site of the Caribsea. Write an expression for the total vertical distance you travel to reach the ship. What is the distance to the ship?

______

2.On the descent to the Caribsea, you stopped to watch a school of fish at a depth of 30 feet. Write an expression for the total vertical distance you traveled before you stopped. What is the distance to the school of fish?

______

3.Your second dive site is the Suloide. Write an expression for the total vertical distance you travel to reach the ship. What is the distance to the ship?

______

At 33 ft beneath the surface, the water’s pressure is one atmosphere.

4.At the Caribsea, the pressure is atmospheres. The pressure is atmosphere when you stop to watch the fish. What is the difference in pressures between these two locations?

______

5.The most pressure you experience during the second dive is
atmospheres. What is the difference in pressures between the
first dive and second dive?

______

Your diving locations relative to the surface can be expressed as integers.

6.Complete the table below with an integer that describes your location.

Event / Position (ft)
Standing on the deck of boat
Adjust equipment and clear mask (at the water’s surface)
Explore the Caribsea shipwreck
Stop to watch the school of fish
Step onto ladder on the side of boat / –4
Standing on the deck of boat

7.Write the integers from the table above in order from least to greatest.

______

8.Quick ReportComplete the report below.

Vertical Distance for First Dive / Vertical Distance for Second Dive / Pressure Difference Between Dives

9.ReflectExplain how you used each skill in this activity.

a.adding and subtracting fractions

______

b.finding absolute values

______

c.comparing and ordering integers

b.I found the vertical distance traveled for each dive.

c.I assigned an integer to each event of the first dive and ordered these distances relative to the ocean’s surface.
