To whom it concerns,
The Carlow County Fleadh Cheoil will take place in Borris the weekend of the 7-9th April 2017. We are hoping to enlist your help in encouraging your students to take part in the various competitions open to them on Saturday the 8th of April in Borris Mixed National School.
There are two types of competitions: The Schools’ Competition and the Fleadh Competition.
The Schools’ Competition is open to any student in a primary school. There are four categories– wind (tin-whistle, flute, recorder, uileann pipes etc.), reed (accordion, concertina, mouth-organ etc.), string (fiddle, banjo, piano, harp, etc.) and song (song in Irish or English, whistling or lilting). The competitions are split into two age groups, Juniors to 2nd class and 3rd to 6th class. Each participant must play one tune or sing one song. The competition takes place from 10.00am to 12.30pm. This is a county competition only and has traditionally been a great opportunity for musicians to meet others and to take part in a friendly competition. Entry fee is €2.
The Fleadh Competition: this is usually for more advanced participants and is open to all ages. The fleadh competition includes music competitions in solo, duet, trio, grúpa cheoil, céilí band and marching band format. There are singing competitions in both Irish and English, as well as whistling and lilting. For bodhrán and drum competitions a maximum of two musicians are permitted to accompany the competitor. All songs and music must be Irish in nature. The competition takes place from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.
We are pleased to announce a new competition as part of the Fleadh Competition; this year’s competition will include a song or tune composition element. The composition must be traditional in character and must be performed on the day, by a solo musician or a singer without accompaniment. The piece can be lively or slow in tempo. All entries must be submitted to me by Friday 24th of March, and only this original version of the tune will be accepted in performance on Saturday 8th of April.
A musician can enter each competition once, but can enter as many competition as wished in both the Schools’ Competition and Fleadh Competition. Competition age groups are: U12 (two tunes of different tempo), 12-15 (two tunes of different tempo), 15-18 (three tunes of different tempo), Over 18 (four tunes of different tempo). I would advise that participants join their local branch of Comhaltas to enter these competitions. Membership will be taken on the day. Entry fee per competition is €2 or €20 per band and grúpa (plus Comhaltas membership fee). Membership €6 for Under 18’s, €12 for Over 18’s and €20 per family.
For more information please view the rules on www.comhaltas.ie, and reference the Downloads section for the Fleadh Rules.
For more information on your local branch of Comhaltas, please contact me on 086 2290018 for South Carlow membership and matters arising about the fleadh. Contact Dave Sheridan for North Carlow membership on 086 0877115.

Quotes of the week:
“A lot of stories, books and films have been made about Titanic. There is only one fact we know for sure to be true: on 15th April 1912, the “Unsinkable” ship the Titanic sank, killing more than 1500 people on board. May they all rest in peace” Daire O Brien, Boys N.S.
“A third class ticket to go on the Titanic cost the equivalent of 30 dollars today” Zack Barron, Boy’s N.S.
“Just finished the book, a wonderful story - Can’t wait to visit Titanic Centre, Belfast now!” Betty Holden, Harristown.
