NATIONAL AFA NEWS

May 5, 2006

Dear AFA member and supporter:

I'm personally writing to thank you for your dedication and support of the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces--especially those who serve our United States Air Force--through your membership in the Air Force Association. Making sure your friends, neighbors and co-workers know that AFA was established to support our Air Force...and for more than 60 years has been the Force behind the Force...is why I want you to be aware of an important initiative: AFA's 2006 Membership Awareness Campaign.

As with any non-profit, volunteer organization, membership is its life-blood...and AFA is no exception. Your Association relies on its membership to determine the measure that its voice is heard on Capitol Hill and to guide us as we speak to the public at-large. We're at a point in our history when the WWII and Korean generations are passing the responsibility to support our military to the Vietnam and Gulf War generations. To ensure we have a strong voice in local communities it's important our members speak out and encourage others to join AFA!

Many of you know on April 1st, the Association moved from a 501(c)19 veterans' organization to a 501(c)(3) education organization, as AFA and its educational arm, the Aerospace Education Foundation (AEF), combined. So what does this consolidation mean to you...and what does it have to do with membership?

As Association Board Chairman Pat Condon and Vice Chairman Boyd Anderson said in their March 31, 2006 letter published in the April issue of AIR FORCE Magazine, 'The single largest change affects those approximately 9,000 individuals who have elected to be Patrons of the Air Force Association. They automatically will receive full membership status and have the benefit of voting and holding elected office.' AFA is, today, an inclusive organization, no longer having any restrictions on membership.

AFA's membership rolls are critical to the Association's future and ability to undertake its three-fold mission of 1) educating the public about the critical role of aerospace power in the defense of our nation, 2) advocating aerospace power and a strong national defense and 3) supporting the Air Force and the Air Force family.

Our 2006 Membership Awareness Campaign, is centered on a quote from General Henry 'Hap' Arnold,

"...our Air Force belongs to those who come from ranks of labor, management, the farms, the stores, the professions and colleges and legislative halls...Air Power will always be the business of every American citizen."

Over the course of the next several months you'll be hearing more about membership and its value to the Association, leading up to a specially focused AFA Membership Awareness Month, September 15 to October 15, 2006. This thirty day period will include a focus on, among other activities, the celebration of AFA's 60th Anniversary...the kick-off of the year long celebration of the Air Force's 60th Anniversary, with special membership activities during our 2006 Air & Space Conference...and the dedication of our Air Force Memorial.

Now to the bottom line: I, and AFA, need your help...now! The over 761,000 Air Force men and women--active, Guard, Reserve and civilian employees--also need your help. We...they... need your voice and the voices of thousands of others to join in accomplishing AFA's mission in the months ahead. Where do these thousands of new voices come from? As General Arnold clearly said, they come from throughout our great country and you know them...personally. Simply ask a friend or neighbor or co-worker to join the AFA! It's really that simple. A membership application is here, for your use.

Please take a few moments to reflect on what AFA means to you...what it means to our Airmen serving today...and what it means to the future of our nation. Please help us grow the Air Force Association's membership by becoming active in this important but simple way...and do it today...recruit at least one new member for AFA this month...and be prepared for more membership-focused opportunities in the months ahead.

Thanks to you for what you do for our Air Force Association...and our Air Force...each and every day. Remember, "Air Power will always be the business of every American citizen."

Best regards...cheers,

Bob Largent
