SCOTFORTH AFTER SCHOOL CLUB – SUMMER HOLIDAY PLAYSCHEME 2016

Back by popular demand our summer holiday playscheme will be running from Monday July 25th to Friday August 19th. Our experienced and qualified team of playworkers will be providing four daily structured activities or workshops for children to enjoy. In between all activity sessions children can enjoy a wide variety of excellent indoor and outdoor free play equipment. We aim to make the summer a memorable time, where children make friends, learn new skills and take away an experience that will inspire their imagination, creativity, physical and social development. Special guests/ activities and events, healthy snacks & drinks are provided for children throughout the day at no extra cost.

Monday 25th July –Bake, Make, Sell & Raise Money for Charity Day-We will be baking lots of cakes and biscuits, making keyrings, crafts and posters to attract parents to our stall where goods can be purchased from 4pm. Children under 8 will be learning about fairness through stories, games and a puppet show, while older children will explore through debate,issues related to social injustice and why it is important to help others. All money raised will be donated to ‘Save the Children’ or Barnardo’sCharity. All children will receive a treat and a certificate to take home at the end of the day for their kind support and donations for a good cause!
Tuesday 26th July – Making Puppets, Puppet Show & Performance Day-All children can enjoy exploring the different kind of puppets we have seen throughout history. There will be a shadow and hand puppet making workshop and children can enjoy stories, creating characters, role play and perform in a show for everyone at the end of the day from 4pm. There will be related toys and gamesfor all children to enjoy.
Wednesday 27th July – StreetDance & Music Day with Special Guest Dance Coach & Workshop Performance- We are so excited about this day. All children will get the opportunity to take part in a street dance workshop provided by amazing coach Mellissa. Mellissa is a qualified dance and trampolining coach. She has fantastic skills working with children to choreograph street dance and will be organising the children to show case their skills at the end of the day from 4pm. Other activities will include making instruments, music games and a quizzes.
Thursday 28th July –Dinosaur & Mythical Creatures Day - Whether its exploring the huge variety of dinosaurs species, like a true palaeontologist or looking at Greek mythology and the amazing related creatures, this day is sure to send both girls and boys imaginations wild. We will be digging for bones in our dinosaur bone digging challenge. There will be an outdoor dinosaur & mythical creature trail competition and many more related crafts, stories and games. Older children will have the chance to create and make a mythical creature costume, whereas if under 8s would like to come dressed up mermaids, monsters and all creatures are welcome. No worries if you can’t find a costume as face painting will be provided.
Friday 29th July - Wacky Water Science & Fun Splash Play Day-In the morning children can enjoy wacky science where they can explore and perform many fascinating experiments using water. In the afternoon we will be playing a variety of beach & water bomb games along with ‘super soaker splat’ so make sure children come prepared with a towel and dry clothes to change into as we will be getting drenched. For children who do not like getting wet, we will have alternative play indoors.
Monday 1st August- Exploring the Natural World & Outdoor Survival DayBecome a young explorer during our nature and outdoor adventure day, there will be nature trails, building bug housesand a matching the bird sounds quiz challenge. There will be den building, stories and crafts for the under 8s. Older children can learn how to read maps, tie knots and survive if they were ever faced without food, water or shelter. We will be looking at foraging edible plants and discussing the dangers and safety of eating from the wild. Children will learn how to build a shelter and collect rain water. This day will be filled with fun activities for all ages.
Tuesday 2nd August – Game Character & Technology Day –Our theme related to game characters will focus on the iconic retro arcade games such as Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede etc. which have recently become more popular amongst younger generations. Information technology is a fascinating subject with many free downloadable child friendly programs such as Scratch, Storytelling Alice and Gamemaker, children aged 8+ will learn about these languages and touch upon what these programs can do and how to use them. Throughout the day we will also be looking at Internet safety and responsible use, using materials such as stories, scenarios and drama which are specifically designed for working with children from 3-11yrs. Again there will be a wide variety of planned activities throughout the day that are suitable for both boys and girls of all ages.
Wednesday 3rdAugust –Change4life- Healthy Kids Day & Trip to Giggles Play Centre- AM - Under 8sAs a change4life supporter we will be organising a day of health awareness with regard to exercise and why it is important to keep healthy. We will be exercising, making low sugar healthy dips along with treats and snacks to consider how we could make swaps!(Further info: change4life) We will look at what recyclable materials such as bottles and tin cans that can be used to make fun games to be played anywhere with children to get them moving! In the morning there will be a trip for children under 8s to Giggles Play Centre where children can enjoy the huge variety of soft play equipment.
Thursday 4th August – Kitchen Garden, Cooking & Food Tasting – On this day children can learn about what produce can be grown in their yard, tubs or garden. We will be looking at herbs and fruit and vegetables that can easily be maintained, harvested and cooked up in the kitchen. We will be cooking up simple soup recipes using herbs and organic produce, making fresh bread, pizza and have a cheese and chutney tasting session for all to enjoy
Friday 5th August – At The Fairground& Indoor Bouncy Castle-In the morning children will have the opportunity to make hats, candy floss, Ice-cream and party bags. In the afternoon there will be a fun fair where children will be able to play hook a duck, coconut shy, guess how many sweets, splat the rat etc. children will be given a number of tokens to spend and if they win games will gain more. There will be prizes, balloons and treats for all children, face painting and a bouncy castle all day.
Monday 8th August- Mini Olympics & Athletic Sports Day-PM Trip Dorrington Road Field- Children can learn about who our British athletes are and why and what they are famous for. There will be quizzes, crafts, medal making and stories. In the afternoon there will be a trip to the Dorrington Road field where all children will be able to practice their athletic skills in our mini Olympic team games competition.
Tuesday 9th August- Crazy Paints Day – Younger children can learn how to mix paints to make colours using poster or fabric paints to hand, foot and finger print,as well as splat and spray to make beautiful pictures to display or take home. Older children will have the opportunity to use fabric paints to make a bedroom wall-hanging picture, use porcelain paint to make a personalised mugs or glass paints to make a candle holder.
Wednesday 10th August –Castles, Knights & Horrible Histories Day+ AM Trip to Lancaster Castle 8yr+In the morning children age 8+ will be visiting Lancaster Castle for a tour and horrible histories talk with local stories and horrible facts, (please note- places are limited to 30 children) Younger children can enjoy making knight or fair maiden head wear, listening to stories and enjoy building a huge castle using boxes and scrap materials. We will be learning about the different castles around Great Britain, looking at why they were built and who lived in them.
Thursday 11th August- Scrap Art Workshop Day – With the theme being objects and inventions children can use a wide variety of scrap materials to create amazing objects, sculptures or inventions. There will be workshops to show children how to upcycle used household items creating something of use, which may have been thrown away! Children can bring along something that they may like to modify from home or junk for recycling. If not don’t worry as we will be providing lots of objects and materials for children to use.
Friday 12th August – Catch the Wind & Things that Fly Day- During this day we will be experimenting with air, wind and flight. Children will have the opportunity to make wind socks, wind chimes, kites, planes and other flying objects. There will be a wealth of stories, crafts and lots more themed activities throughout the day for all ages.
Monday 15th August- Travel around the World in 8 Hours– Children will be using their imaginations to experience what it would be like to travel around the world to explore different cultures, animals, music, play games, sample food and learn how life is in other countries. We will be learning how to say hello in different languages, listening to each other’s experiences and sharing stories. We will be celebrating our family and individual cultural backgrounds by looking at our history and pin pointing this on a world map display. Therefore, if you would like, please ensure children share with us your family culture. Do you have family or close friends who live or have come from somewhere else in the world? Do you have anything to show and tell? If so we would be delighted to hear all about it.
Tuesday 16th August –Cartoon, Comic & Super Hero Day- During this day we will have a wealth of themed activities, physical games, stories, a super hero treasure trail challenge and quizzes with prizes. Enjoy making costumes, badges, and comic decoupage pictures. Please feel free to dress up as your favourite superhero, comic or cartoon character.
Wednesday 17th August -Trip to Grizedale Forest Park, Adventure playground + Stickman Trail – under 8s & Forest explorer or orienteering trail 8+ Our trip to Grizedale Forest(Lake District) is an excellent opportunity for children to enjoy outdoor activities that will spark their imaginations and connect them with nature. There are fairy kingdoms, 3D mazes and thrilling sculptures to find and just recently Stick Man has arrived, providing an exciting adventure trail with activities along the way. For older children, we are aiming to complete an explorer or orienteering challenge, build dens, and find the many Gruffalo & musicalsculptures throughout the forest. Children need a packed lunch in a throw away bag, be prepared for if the weather is rainy with waterproof shoes & clothing. £2 spending money can be brought for an ice-cream or drink.
Thursday 18th August – Sports Coaching & Games Day– In the morning we will be taking equipment to Dorrington Road field to practice sports skills and play games. Children will be put into age appropriate groups for the activities. Please note we do have use of the facilities at the scout hut during this time. In the afternoon there will be quizzes, games (football, netball, skittle ball) and related crafts.
Friday 19th August – Party Celebration & Talent Show Day- Our end of summer party is sure to be one to remember. In the morning children can make party food, hats andpractice talents and in the afternoon can enjoy celebrating by playing games, eating food and watching our very own talent show. There will be certificates and prizes for all children who take part.

Please note pack lunches are required to be provided from home. In addition to this children can enjoy our superfood snack bar during lunch for an extra 50p. We are holding a full day trip to ‘Grizedale Forest’ on August 17th. During this day there will be no alternative arrangements for those requiring full or half day care at the Club and there is an additional fee of £3.50 towards the transport costs. All of our staff are experienced, trained and are fully DBS/CRB cleared. All of our three large outdoor play areas are fenced with security gates, intercom system & CCTV so that children are free to play, learn and explore in a safe and secure environment. All of our activities are planned for different age groups to ensure they are appropriate for the learning and development of each group. The year groups are as follow: Nursery & Reception, Yrs 1 & 2, Yrs 3 & 4 and Yrs 5 & 6 & 7. Children are encouraged to join in activities that are planned for their age group, however we are aware that being separated from siblings/friends may be unsettling so we can be flexible and in some cases group children together if preferred. We do however; where age gaps are significant, encourage this to be temporary so that children can get the best opportunities for their age while in our care.
