CODE TO CAREERS COMPUTER TRAINING NOTES

Cy Pres Grant and RUSD Program

RUSD will hold Code Combat, a pilot program, at Fremont Elementary and Longfellow Elementary schools. Code Combat targets 3rd to 12th grade students but the after school program is for sixth graders. SmartRiverside’s grant requires that the students who participate are considered low-income and Steve Kong indicated that the majority of students at these schools are on the school lunch program. Once the students complete the course work, they will receive a free laptop at their promotion ceremony.

DigiGirlz- New Date: Saturday, May 6

County of Riverside will be hosting the DigiGirlz, a Microsoft Youth Spark Program in partnership with Smart Riverside Code to Careers as a County wide event on Saturday, May 6. The event will be held at the Riverside County Information Technology – RCIT building located at 3450 14th Street, Riverside, CA 92501. Spectrum Internet Assist

Spectrum Internet TM Assist is High-speed Internet at an affordable price. Through the Spectrum Internet Assist program, qualified households can receive:

•High-speed 30 Mbps Internet with no data caps

•Internet modem included

•No contracts required

•Add in-home WiFi for $5 more per month

To qualify for Spectrum Internet Assist, a member of the household must be a recipient of one of the following programs:

•The National School Lunch Program (NSLP); free or reduced cost lunch

•The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the NSLP

•Supplemental Security Income (SSI) ( ≥ age 65 only)

April Innovation Month

The entire month of April will feature the many innovative and entrepreneurial activities and events that occur every day in Riverside County. This month-long showcase has been coordinated by the County of Riverside, the City municipalities therein and related organizations to bring awareness to the many areas of innovation and entrepreneurship in the County.

RUSD Activities

•School tours in April–Magnolia Elementary and Arlington High School will be hosting a tour. The Mayor and Steve Reneker are scheduled to attend.

•RUSD is hosting two Girls Who Code Nights –Girls Who Code Family Nights are free, family events in which female students grades 6-9 pair up with their parent or guardian to explore coding together. In addition, participants will earn about the after school Girls Who Code opportunities in RUSD.

•Heritage Family Code Night – RUSD is holding a class for parents to discuss the importance of computer science. The class will be held at Sierra Middle School on April 26th.

•Robotics Camp - RUSD will be hosting a week long robotics program at Bourns in partnership with La Sierra University. All participants would be on the district’s free or reduced lunch. You can find more information about the program here:

TechHire Initiative

Steve Massa is working on a work plan to build a new website for TechHire.

Long Nights of Arts and Innovation

The Long Nights event is scheduled for October 12, 2017, 5 p.m. to midnight.

NAVSEA

The Minority Educational Institution Student Partnership Program offers talented undergraduate and graduate students summer internship positions with the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Laboratories. Positions involve scientific research or a focus on policy, business, and government relations. Internships include lodging, round trip airfare, and student stipends. As program participants, students receive an intensive 8-10 week assignment to "jump-start" their careers and develop their potential for future opportunities within the federal government. Students work side-by-side with leading scientists, engineers, and other top professionals to develop professional skills and enhance leadership capabilities.

Library

The library is adding maker spaces to all of its branches. The library recently spent about $60,000 for new equipment including laser cutter and 3-D printers.

RCOE Event – April 20, Engaging Girls in STEM: Making the Connection for Action (3:30-7:00 p.m.)

The California Department of Education in collaboration with the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls are working together to promote statewide outreach to LEAs highlighting and encouraging girls and young women to explore, enroll, and complete STEM courses and pursue postsecondary degrees in STEM majors ultimately leading to careers in STEM.

•Share Fair of organizations highlighting their STEM initiatives around girls

•Panel of experts and practitioners in the STEM field that will share research, and their experiences inspiring girls to pursue careers in the STEM fields.

•Network with other professionals
