Rationale for Middle School Scope:

I feel it is important to allow students to experience the many areas of physical fitness during this day and age, which is why I have put together a variety of activities that include sport and recreational activities as well as other fitness areas that might follow students throughout their lives such as dance. Before you introduce activities such as yoga, aerobics, or circuit training, which are more commonly found to be exercised outside of physical education class today, students need to have good hand-eye-foot coordination and gross motor skills to allow them to go that extra mile. These skills can be developed through sport-like activities. The following sports I have chosen reflect the Teaching Games for Understanding model where common games will be modified according to the developmental level of the students and the lessons will not be highly structured. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of many different movement concepts, principles, and strategies.

I feel it is very important that students learn about strategy in game-like situations but not so that students build a feeling of great pressure to do well or feel forced to become very competitive against their peers. I want to open students to many of the sport activities our world has to offer, hoping that every student will find his/her talent or strong point. If we introduce a variety of activities, students may hopefully find one or more that will keep their interest and allow them achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness outside of P.E., as stated in standard four of the National Standards for Physical Education.

Another standard I would like to address is number one, “Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.” This standard can be achieved through sport and recreational activities taught using the TGFU model. Students will learn to through TGFU how to throw, catch, receive, pass, guard, jump, change pathways, directions, levels, and learn about general and self-space through the many sport activities because each sport requires different skills and maneuvering tactics.

Rationale for High School Scope:

The reason I choose the activities I choose for my high scope is because I wanted to follow the Teaching Games for Understanding model which incorporates modified games where students must think about the tactical problem on which the instruction is focused. TGFU develops tactical awareness and a better understanding on what to do to solve a problem. Skills are practiced in a game-like manner and ends with a final game that provides students with the opportunity to apply their practice in an authentic setting. TGFU is centered on the students and moves from a content based approach with highly structured classes to a more students based approach which I feel is more beneficial to the students.

I feel it is important in high school to introduce many of the sport athletics that are offered in the school so students may gain a liking for a certain sport activity that they were once always afraid to try out for before. This could open more students to the school’s athletic program, improving the school’s sport athletic program. I had never wanted to sign-up for track and field in school before I had physical education class and one of our units was track and field. The unit opened me up to many of the options track and field provided at my school and I later signed-up, running the 100 and 200 meter dash and the relay. It also had me continue running on my own time after the season and the unit in P.E.

In high school students are pressured into many new things every day and we need to help them find where they fit in. This is also why I wanted to introduce aerobics and self-defense. In addition, provide them with the opportunity to choose whether or not they would like to experiment with activities such as yoga, slimnastics, and taebo. Slimnastics is an exercise that combines dancing, aerobics, and gymnastics al into one big activity. This type of exercise hasrecently become popular at health clubs, gyms and even senior centers (thedailyplate.com).
