SCIENCE FAIR CONTRACT

**DUE: Friday, November 4, 2016

I, ______, will do the Science Fair Project this school year. I understand the Science Fair Project will count as at least 4 test grades. I know the HMS Science Fair will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, and I will be accountable for entering a Science Fair Project. I also understand that I must follow the science fair timeline and turn parts of the project in at specific times. If I sign and return this contract, I am responsible for meeting every deadline stated on the timeline. I recognize that my science fair project is worth at least 900 points, as outlined in the timeline.

November 4: Contract DUE (20 points)

November 10: Topic (20 points) and Application DUE (20 points each)

1. Application,

  1. Name, Date, Period (also list here if it is a TEAM project- and partners name/team)
  2. Topic and Title of Your project
  3. One paragraph about what you are trying to test or find out.
  4. One paragraph discussing your general idea for your procedure of your experiment
  5. Turn in either typed or neatly hand written please.

TBA: Research Day in Computer lab. Bring any materials you need for your research and topic.

November 22:Research Plan Due (100 points).

Research Plan Instructions:

  1. Question being addressed: This is your research question and supporting information. What question will you answer through your project and why did you pick that question?
  2. Hypothesis/Problem/Engineering Goals: This is your hypothesis and your research problem. You can add goals of your project, like what you hope to do with the information that you learn. (Hypothesis: This needs to be an “If…Then…” statement. If I do this…., then this will happen. (**Remember, it is OK if your hypothesis turns out to be wrong. This does not mean you fail!! This is just part of the scientific method. Not everyone can be right the first time they do something! Your project CAN show that your hypothesis was wrong.)
  3. Description in detail of method or procedures:
  4. Procedures: Detail all procedures and experimental design to be used for data collection. This should be a numbered list using as much detail as possible. There should be multiple steps.
  5. Data Analysis: Describe the procedures you will use to analyze the data that answer research questions or hypothesis. At first, this section will answer the questions: What will you do with the data? How will you analyze the data to get results? By the time you use this in the fair, it should also include the results of your data analysis.
  6. Bibliography: You must list (5) major references. Please complete the bibliography using MLA Style. For more assistance, see you Language teacher or

December 6: Experiment is finished! Results and Observations DUE.(50 points)

This means your EXPERIMENT IS DONE!!!

By turning in your results and all observations today, this means that your experiment would have to be DONE PRIOR TO THIS DATE! This way you will have time to turn in a NEAT copy of all your results, data and observations.

Results: This may be measurements, time recordings, data tallies from surveys, etc. Be sure to include a final statement (conclusion) as to whether or not your data supported your hypothesis. Do you reject your hypothesis because it is wrong? Remember it’s OK to be wrong!!!

December 16: All parts of the Report, (including Abstract) and oral presentation DUE. Presentation can be typed, neatly hand written or on index cards. Report: 200 pts, Abstract: 100 pts, Presentation: 100 pts. You are required to follow the format of the “Science Fair Report Guidelines.”

Your abstract should be on the official abstract form. In the box, you should put a 200 word SUMMARY of your entire project.

January 10Display and projects DUE. (600 points). Set up Projects after school. You need to provide your own table. Your table should include: your backboard with information, abstract, research plan, and report (remember your report also has a copy of the abstract, so you have a total of 2 copies of the abstract). You may also include a display but be mindful of regulations. The following list does not cover all of the rules. NO liquid, NO glass, NO living things. There are many rules regarding displays so you are expected to refer to the rules in your Science Fair Guide. If you have any questions, ask! Don’t wait until the last minute! (Projects are due by 4:30pm.)

January 11: Science Fair. There will be an Open House at 5:30pm followed by an awards ceremony at 6pm. Families are encouraged to attend! Projects and tables need to be completely removed from the gym following the ceremony.

** Points will be deducted from your final grade for each deadline that is missed. Stay on time with your project, do not get behind.**
