Founded in 1817, ASD is the nation’s oldest and Connecticut’s only educational organization exclusively devoted to serving the deaf community. Students come from Connecticut, as well as other states and several foreign countries. ASD serves all ages from infancy through adulthood. Funding is provided by an annual appropriation from the Connecticut General Assembly, contributions and grants, fees paid by students’ home districts and federal funds. All services are provided free of charge to students and their families. Out-of-state students are admitted at the approval and expense of the state or foreign country in which they reside or are citizens.

The school offers a full academic program from pre-kindergarten through high school; vocational training and work-experience programs; Monday-Friday residential services; special education programs for students with additional disabilities; and accelerated programming for superior academic achievers.

A full range of athletic programs is offered, featuring both boys’ and girls’ varsity sports. A wide variety of extra curricular activities are available.

Support services specifically oriented to deafness include audiology, speech therapy, physical therapy, psychological services, guidance counseling, vocational counseling, a parent organization and a 24-hour student health center.

Referrals for admissions to the American School for the Deaf are accepted from local boards of education, social service agencies or other agencies bearing programming and placement responsibility for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth. Parents interested in admission information should contact the Director of Special Education in their local public school district or the American School for the Deaf. All ASD programs incorporate the TOTAL COMMUNICATION philosophy. In addition to the school program, the following services for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available at ASD: EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM for infants and pre-schoolers and their parents, PACES for children and adolescents with emotional/behavioral problems, SUMMER CAMP and SUMMER ENRICHMENT programs, ADULT VOCATIONAL SERVICES and opportunities in SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES.

A newly added service is the ASD PARENT CENTER. This is an information resource center primarily for parents of ASD students and families with children in other ASD programs. Other inquiries are welcome. Services include a lending library with information on hearing impairment, parent education and information regarding hearing impairment from local, state and national resources. The CENTER also provides a place to meet other parents with deaf and hard of hearing children and discuss common needs and concerns.
