School Vice-Presidents Job Description

The position of Vice-President is an important role within your School and leads representation at the level of discipline or theme. Working closely throughout the year with their respective Class Reps, the Vice-President reports to their School President and supports their work and priorities. The Vice-President also plays an important role in facilitating feedback by leading Student Staff Liaison Committee (SSLC) Meetings. The Vice-President position is open to the newly elected pool of Class Representatives within a particular School and is an opportunity for experienced Class Reps to take on new responsibilities and duties. This is a rewarding role and provides a great opportunity to improve skills and be a part of the culture of continuous improvement within your School.

Online Training will be provided to Vice-Presidents and you will be expected to participate in development opportunities organised by DUSA and the University. Duties and expectations may change depending on the size of the School and this will be discussed with your School President after you have been successfully chosen by your fellow representatives. School Presidents will also organise regular meetings with their Vice-Presidents in order to discuss School-wide issues, and to work on enhancement of the student experience.

Key responsibilities:

Organise and participate in key meetings – Vice-Presidents will be supported by their Schools who will organise SSLC meetings across the academic year. The Vice-Presidents will be expected to participate in the meeting and may be expected to Chair as well as, working to support Class Reps to collate and present feedback at the meetings.

Collate reports for the School President – Vice-Presidents will be required to collate and provide reports to the School Presidents on the key learning and teaching issues and development in their disciplines/themes. A Vice-President should also look for best practice and ensure this is communicated for dissemination around the School.

Promote student engagement through feedback – Vice-Presidents will be expected to be the champions of student feedback within their discipline/theme.

Engage with the University’s Periodic Programme Review Process and the external Enhancement-Led Institutional Review where applicable – Vice-Presidents may be asked to gather student feedback as part of internal and external reviews, and also participate in meetings with review boards/panels.

Develop solutions – Working with staff, students and representatives, Vice-Presidents will play an important role in developing solutions to issues and problems that emerge.

Communication – Vice-Presidents are an important link between the School President and students. Vice-Presidents will be expected to communicate back to Class Reps decisions and developments that are made at the highest levels of the School and DUSA.
