NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017
FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
The next few weeks are an important time for our College family. On Friday we farewelled our graduating Year 12 cohort. For the last 13 years the familiar routine of school life has been the rhythm of learning, working and spending time with friends. Now at the completion of Year 12 our students stand ready to face life’s challenges ahead. The end of the year always serves as an opportunity to reflect and reminisce. I am very proud of the class of 2017 as I have seen them contribute to positive changes within the college community, through their commitment to learning, development of talents and fun loving nature. I wish them every success for their future.
Regards,
Bronwyn Johnstone

SENIOR CAMPUS NEWS
Courtney M - A Shooting Star!
Senior student and State Emergency Service Cadet, Courtney M has done Capalaba State College proud.
Courtney was selected to be interviewed on a new television series airing on Channel 9Go in January 2018, in her role as Junior Cadet Leader.
She was chosen to represent the cadets because of her commitment, self-discipline and natural leadership skills. Her certification in First Aid and CPR enabled her to display her skills and explain on camera some of the duties required in emergency situations. The program will show Courtney swinging into action with cool, professional calm as she takes charge of a snake bite emergency. Various other duties are profiled also, such as sandbagging and managing volunteers.
Courtney is identified as a stellar cadet. She has been offered a position in the State Youth Leadership Program, a program open to those with excellent leadership potential. She was recently chosen to attend the annual ‘Escape Week’, which saw Courtney visiting facilities all over Queensland including Marine Rescue, Surf Life Saving, Police and Fire Stations.
Courtney enjoys the learning experiences and problem solving activities Cadets have to offer, and looks forward to a future of leadership and teamwork, perhaps with the Police or Youth Justice.
Enthusiastic Year 11 and Year 12 students commenced study for a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways in Term 2, 2017 and completed it at the end of Term 3, 2017 through Axiom College. JUNIOR CAMPUS NEWS
Year 3 Wellington Point Excursion
The Grade 3 students had a wonderful Geography excursion at Wellington Point recently. Our students eagerly made field sketches, collected primary data, interviewed their peers and took notes from the Educational Officer who came to speak to our group.
One of the best parts of the excursion was when we walked back from King Island. We watched as hundreds of small crabs scurried back into their holes in the sand! We even saw a large osprey fly past! As we observed the young families, dog walkers, fishermen and numerous other people enjoying the Point, we could see why this area is considered an important geographical location for the Redlands area. What a great day!

Year 4 IndigiScapes and Welling Point Excursion
On Thursday, 2nd November, Year 4 studentswent on an excursion to IndigiScapes and Wellington Point Reserve on a 5 star bus. Year 4 students went to IndigiScapes because we are learning about recycling and landfill in geography. The activities we participated in were a treasure hunt, bush tucker walk and the waste and recycling information session. In the treasure hunt, we were supplied with magnifying glasses and colour cards to match our surroundings. In the dam, the Year 4 students were lucky enough to see eel, turtles, water hens, frogs, tadpoles, water dragons and lizards.
When we had our bush tucker walk, the ranger gave us berries and plants to taste. We tasted a blue flax lily and a wild mint leaf. At the end of our bush tucker walk we were able to view a 400 year old tallow wood tree from a relaxing chair. We then enjoyed morning tea with our friends, in the gardens of IndigiScapes.
Craig from IndigiScapes spoke to us about waste and recycling. He showed us some really sad outcomes of what litter and waste can do to our environment. One of the things Craig displayed was a photograph of a local creek that was polluted with all sorts of rubbish like old tyres, plastic bags and takeaway cups.
We arrived at Wellington Point and had a quick picnic lunch so that we had the energy to begin our walk to King Island. We put on our thongs and began walking. Izabelle and Chilli were left in charge of photographing any waste that they could find, but were often having trouble keeping up! We saw glass, plastic and bottles. We also took photos of other things we thought were interesting. After our exciting trip, we arrived back at school. Fortunately we didn’t have to do any school work that day.

CHESS NEWS
ANOTHER MEDAL FOR CAPALABA STATE COLLEGE CHESS TEAM
Five students from CapalabaState College were among 395 who competed in the Brisbane Individual Age Chess Championships at Brisbane Boys’ Grammar on 8th November.
This year it was Michael M who upheld our College’s proud record of medalling in this event every year since we began competing in 2011. Michael placed third in the 16 years division. As well as a medal, Michael also received a book prize (a chess book, naturally) as part of his achievement.
The Age Championships mark the end of the 2017 interschool chess year. It has again been a successful campaign for our talented teams, seeing us finish 15th overall in Brisbane (and 3rd among state schools). We also gained a champion, with James L winning the B-grade championship. As well, all our team members finished the year with Qld Junior Chess Association accreditations.
