Background

Hamilton School of English is British Council accredited and offers a Summer programme in Stirling for students aged between 11-17. The School has been operating for more than 30 years and offers overseas’ students the opportunity to combine English language tuition with a varied cultural and activity programme.

The Stirling programme is based at the University of Stirling campus.

The programme dates offered in 2017 are 3 weeks from 3rd July to 23rd July 2017.

Teachers are provided with full support and are provided with a comprehensive teachers’ handbook which includes syllabus guidelines, pre-excursion lessons, project work ideas as well as student welfare information, including child protection and student behaviour guidelines.

Objective of Programme

The overall objective is to provide an enjoyable experience for students which is underpinned by a sound academic approach and which ensures that the classroom based learning links closely to the programme of activities and excursions.

Structure of Programme

Our teaching programme provides students with 20 hours of tuition per week, made up of 15 hours English tuition (3 hours each morning) plus 2 afternoons of 2.5 hours Project work.

The morning is split into 3 teaching sessions with a 15 minute break in between. Classes are multi-national, with a maximum of 15 students.

In the afternoons, evenings and at weekends the students take part in an extensive range of

Activities, sports and excursions.

Teachers have access to a wide range of supplementary materials and resources. In addition, teachers are encouraged to experiment and use their own materials. Teaching session 1 generally focuses on new topics and language work. Teaching session 2 focuses more on communication and fluency work. Teaching session 3 focuses on mini-projects and preparation for the Cultural Programme.

Main purpose of job

To deliver lessons effectively, professionally and appropriate to students’ level and age. To undertake related administrative tasks.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Welfare

1. To read and understand the staff handbook and be fully conversant with our policies for the welfare and protection of children. At all times, whilst on duty,staff are responsible for the care and safety of students whilst also ensuring they are following school rules

Academic

1. Teach English to a high standard with the emphasis on oral communication.

2. Liaise with co-teachers to ensure the lessons are coordinated to reflect the syllabus.

3. Attend regular meetings as organised by the Academic Manager

4. Complete required documentation, such as class lists, weekly plans, Student Reports,

attendance registers et al.

5. Assist with the welcome and testing of students on the first morning.

6. Set homework daily.

7. Be observed by the AcademicManager, usually during the first or second week of employment.

8. Be available for informal Teacher Personal Development focusing on matters arising from

the teaching week.

9. Provide feedback on the Academic Programme to the Academic Manager.

10. Utilise knowledge and experiences of cultural excursions/activities within the classroom

environment.

11. Look after centre materials and equipment and ensure they are returned at the end of each activity.

12. Assist with centre administration and other general tasks as directed.

Essential criteria

  • Native English speaker competence
  • Degree or equivalent
  • PVG scheme membership
  • RSA / Cambridge CELTA or Trinity TESOL Certificate and / or Qualified Teacher Status - (QTS) or equivalent* *Other TEFL qualifications may be acceptable provided they have been validated by a recognised external body. They must include a minimum of 6 hours supervised teaching practice and 100 hours of input
  • Genuine interest in both the teaching and welfare of young students
  • Flexibility, especially in non-teaching duties, and a team player
  • Smart and tidy appearance

Desirable criteria

  • RSA / Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma in TESOL or PGCE TEFL / TESOL with

experience

  • Experience of working with 11 to 17 year olds
  • Previous summer school experience
  • Interest or experience that could be utilised in project work/the Cultural Programme (sports, games, arts,music and drama etc.)
  • First Aid qualifications

Remuneration

Salary per week is £270-£300, depending on experience and qualifications. In addition all staff accrue paid holidays during their period of employment which is paid at the end of the contract. Holiday entitlement is set at 28 days per annum pro-rata. The salary is based on a 5 day working week (Monday – Friday) with 20 hours of classroom contact per week (15 hours morning teaching, 5 hours afternoon project work) and is inclusive of lesson preparation time and teaching administration. Overtime may be available on additional evenings or weekends but this must be agreed in advance with the Academic/Centre Manager.Salaries are paid in arrears into a UK bank account on a monthly basis.

Dates

Contracts are available for the3 week period from 3rdJuly to 21st July 2017.

Suitability for Working with Children/Criminal Record Checks

As part of the application process all teachers are required to sign a declaration regarding criminal records and suitability for teaching juniors. It is a criminal offence to seek employment with Hamilton School of English while barred by the Independent Safeguarding Authority. In addition it is the duty of Hamilton School of English to refer any individual to the Independent Safeguarding Authority who is considered to have caused harm or to pose a risk of harm to under 18-s and vulnerable groups.

All successful applicants will be subject to a PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) check with Disclosure Scotland.
