SCHOOL TO WORK PLANNING
INTRODUCING THE LOGBOOK TO YEAR 9
Presentation to staff, Kyogle High School, 30th July 2002
What is School to Work Planning?
Part of NSW Government’s ‘Ready to Work Plan’
-Govt’s commitment to improving the preparation of school leavers moving into the workforce or further education & training by providing them with:
* relevant vocational skills
* up-to-date workplace knowledge
* advice on a broad range of options.
DET has developed the School to Work Plan that focuses on
* individual students school to work plans
* expanding work education programs
* improving work experience program
* developing industry-specific information on vocational pathways
* providing training & development for Careers Advisers, executive & teachers.
Individual school to Work Plans involve
* Planning and written action plans
* Tracking and recording of study programs/achievements
* Recording employment-related skills
* Involvement in career-related activities
* Collation of data for resumes, applications interviews etc.
What have we done so far?
-Student at-risk program
* Integration, aboriginal, non-attenders, low achievement students
* Individual school Plans
* Specific programs, Work Education (Yrs 9 & 10), Work Studies (Yrs 11 & 12)
-Individual Plans and interviews eg Yr 12, Yr 11 (Term 3), Yr 10 (subject
Planning
-Coordinated school approach to implementing strategies (Yr Advisers, executive, STLD etc)
Extending what we are doing
-Introduce Employment Related skills Logbook to Year 9, Semester 2, 2002.
-Classroom teachers to log employment related skills for at least one vocational learning activity in Semester 2 for 2002.
What are the Logbooks?
-Resource that supports individual school to work planning enabling students to
* record employment related skills
* develop action plans (goal setting) & track achievements
* database to develop resumes and assist with applications and
interviews.
-Resource for school and teachers for writing references, identifying subject relevance, being accountable to the community.
What’s in the Logbooks?
-Layout
* Introduction – Statement of use, Action plans, Tracking sheets
* Individual sections for recording employment-related skills;
subdivided Stage 5 & Stage 6 for each section.
* Summary section; database for resume, applications etc.
-Case Study, Year 9 & 10 in Classroom Section
* Examples demonstrate the learning/recording process
1. Faculty/teacher has nominated a learning activity that illustrates employment-related skills
2. In class, used student discussion to develop a list of employment-related skills developed by the activity (small group or class activity)
3. recorded relevant employment related skills in their log-book.
* Examples demonstrate the wide-range of classroom activities can be used eg
- end-of-topic eg writing a story, music composition,
- special training programs eg CPR
-special activities eg eating out, excursions
-procedures eg sculpture, scientific method, art diaries
- assignments eg Egyptian assignment
* Observing careers & training (top box) etc can be as simple as
- noting careers seen on a video, movie, in novels etc
-asking guest speakers in classroom & excursion to
comment on current career, pathways and education
training.
Why use the Logbooks?
Students * Experience from Year 8 Study Skills Day
(parents) * 70% of Year 12 school-leavers at KHS go directly into
work or further education & training (Uni students often support
themselves with work). Need to be able to explicitly link schooling to employment.
* Potential to improve the employability of our school leavers. Improve resumes, applications, articulation of ideas in interviews. Develop skills to manage career changes.
Teachers * Make subject relevant to student’s career planning. Assists with motivation & learning.
(school) * explicit statement to school community
* BOS requirements. Career Ed statement, explicit (&implicit) content statements in all current Stage 5 syllabi. Cross curriculum statement in all current Stage 6 syllabi and in new Stage 5 syllabi.
* Assist with programming vocational learning activities in subjects.
* State Government priority
* Transition planning an agreed educational goal & outcome for Commonwealth and all State Governments.
What can be done for Year 9 Semester 2, 2002?
Step 1. 1. Map Vocational learning activities in your current Year 9 program.
Maybe add any additional activities that could enhance your current program.
2. Choose at least one activity to be a focus for recording
employment-related skills in the logbook.
Step 2. 1. Use the faculty sheet to practice writing nominated activity in
preparation for class delivery in Semester 2. Timetable the event.
Explanation
1. Mapping vocational learning activities
* explicit & implicit content statements
* examples from other schools
2. Faculty employment-related skills log sheets.
Future Considerations
-What, where, how, when, who…..for
* storing logbooks
* student access (trial faculty sheets)
* collation of faculty sheets
* use of discs
* training of students
* completion of tracking sheets, action plans
* timing of classroom activities (flexible, SWP week)
Future directions
* continuation of logging activities in Year 10, 2003
* collation of database and resume writing
* movement from teacher-centred to student-centred responsibility
Guiding Principles
* whole-school approach
* SWP logbook activities should enhance existing classroom practice
* use available support; assist with preparation and support major initiatives.
