ñ  The fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Debbie Buchanan, Mrs. Lisa Silva and Mrs. Michelle Stanchina, provided an overview of Dublin Elementary’s intervention program and RTI (Response to Intervention and Instruction) process that assists to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress measurement, and provides additional resources for children who continue to have difficulty.

ñ  Each student is tested at the beginning of the school year to determine their individual skill set and then separated into smaller focus groups with students with similar proficiencies. A strategic education plan is then developed according to those specific needs. More attention is now placed on assessing how much time should be spent on each subject being studied and allowing the students to guide if they are ready to proceed to the next level of instruction.

ñ  The RTI process consists of three tiers. The first tier starts at the teacher instruction level, then into the grade level via targeted, skill specific instruction. The third tier consists of specialist instructions for those students who require an IEP, or Individualized Education Plan.

ñ  Dublin Elementary provides each grade level with its own intervention aid. They also have a Professional Learning Community consisting of teachers and specialists (psychologists, counselors, speech therapists, etc.) who collaborate and assist with the success of the intervention program and RTI process.
