India and Philippines
  1. Can I travel to India or Philippines earlier or stay after placement finishes?
You will be required to travel to and from India and the Philippines as part of the student group on the dates advised by the School of Social and Policy Studies. Private travel will only be accepted within the 14 days after finalisation of the placement experience.
  1. Can I book my own accommodation?
No, accommodation will be booked in a twin share room by the University.
  1. Can I bring a friend to India or the Philippines with me?
No, you are required to travel to and from India or the Philippines as part of the student group. Students will be staying together at the same accommodation.
  1. Will the flights be booked for me?
No, you will need to book your flights through Phil Hoffman travel. You will be advised by staff of the School of Social and Policy Studies which flights exactly to book.
  1. How do I pay for flights?
Once you have confirmed your tentative itinerary with Phil Hoffmann travel and staff in the School of Social and Policy Studies, you will be required to pay Phil Hoffman travel directly for your flights. You will have the choice of BPay, Credit card or paying in person.
  1. How long does my passport need to be valid?
Your passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining from your return date.
  1. Will I need a visa?
Yes, you will need a visa for your placement in India and the Philippines. Staff in the School of Social and Policy Studies will provide you with the details.
  1. Do I need to arrange for travel insurance?
Yes, you will need to arrange travel isurance. It is recommended that you arrange your travel insurance through the University, although this is not mandatory.
  1. Is a deposit required?
Yes, you will be required to pay a deposit to the School of Social and Policy Studies which will cover the cost of your accommodation.
  1. What about travel health?
All students should obtain travel related medical information, treatment and advice prior to traveling overseas for this placement from your local GP.
  1. What about my fitness for placement or a pre-existing medical condition?
Placement providers may establish, in consultation with the University, requirements for students to demonstrate fitness to undertake placements abroad. These requirements may include health or other checks or a self declaration as to their fitness to undertake the placement. Any such checks or declarations must be accepted by the University as reasonable and then must be:
  • applicable to all students involved in such placements; and
  • related to the requirements of the duties or functions to be carried out in the placement
  • consistent with University policy and Commonwealth and State Government legislation relating to equal opportunity and discrimination.
A student who cannot demonstrate fitness to undertake the placement or who refuses to undertake a required check or make a self declaration may be refused placement. Where there is a pre-existing medical or other condition such that the ability to practice may be impaired, the student will discuss the issues with Social Work Field Education staff so that where possible reasonable accommodations, an access plan or a modified placement that will meet the learning outcomes of the topíc can be arranged.
