School Nurse Vision Screening Certification

Friday September 23, 2016(11:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.) at Heartland AEA 11, 6500 Corporate Drive, Johnston, Iowa (Room 139)
Registration Deadline: September 20, 2016
Purpose: Participants will learn the Prevent Blindness America vision screening method taught by a certified trainer. After successful completion of the course the school nurse will be a certified vision screener. This program meets all requirements of the Iowa Vision Screening Law. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice skills in a local elementary school.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the signs of vision concerns and potential eye problems in children and youth.
2. Demonstrate how to conduct a vision screening exam and interpret screening results, including when to refer a student for a professional eye exam.
3. Develop a comprehensive vision screening program that includes re-screening when indicated and follow up to determine program outcomes.

Course Requirements: Heartland AEA 11, provider #147, is offering .45 CEU credit for a fee of $15. Students must attend the entire 4 hours to receive credit and pass certification testing. Nurses may attend and receive screening certification without paying for CEU credit.
Other Information:
Space is limited and priority will be given toschool nurses new for the 2016-2017 school year. Please dress in comfortable but professional clothing since we will be screening children in a local elementary school. Bring either a sack lunch or take-out food with you. We will all eat together during the first hour of the meeting. You are welcome to bring beverages and snacks to class as well.
