Step 1—Desired Results
Standard Outcomes for Learning (ACTFL Standard 1.1)
By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
Identify family members in pictures and recognize the words in Arabic.
Draw their family tree and introduce their family to their colleagues.
Compare the family members’ names in Arabic and in English cultures.
Differentiate between male and female words according to "ت ، ة ، ـة " “ هذا ، هذه “ .
Step 2—Assessment Evidence
Performance task—What will students do to show what they have learned?
I are asked to say the word on the flashcard and give the meaning in English
Students are to match the Arabic word with the English meaning.
Students will read a simple paragraph introducing a family then they are going to answer comprehension questions.
Step 3—Learning Plan
Teaching aids:
Powerpoint slides.
Flashcards.
Markers and index cards.
Warm up: I show Ss a picture of a small family. I ask them “ Can you guess what relationship combines them together?”
I use the powerpoint slides to show the students one picture of a family member. I ask students " من هذا ؟"using TPR so they answer in English . I say their answer in Arabic and I ask them to repeat after me. Then I take out the suitable flash card and show them the word in Arabic. I say it in a sentence " هذه \ هذه .."Then I ask them to repeat it again and I write it down on the board saying each letter I write. I ask them to say the sentence on the board taking turns. After that I ask them to write it downs in their notebooks. I check and give them feedback.
After presenting all the family members I give them a worksheet with a some very simple sentences in Arabic " هذا أبي...... \ هذه أمي...... " and they fill in the gaps with the names of their family members. I explain the difference between هذا andهذه.
Finally I give them the index cards and ask them to draw their family trees using Arabic words.
Students do word search to find the names of the family members in Arabic.
Students are asked to pictures their family members and design a powerpoint presentation in Arabic to introduce their families to their colleagues.
Step 4—Reflection
All the objectives are achieved and the students were excited and active most of the period which is 80 minutes. They were very enthusiastic to do the powerpoint project.
