Objectives: At the end of this lesson the students will be able to volley a balloon back and forth with a partner, and volley over an object.

Learning Cues:

“Watch your balloon!”“Above your head” “Ready Feet!”

Set Induction: In the last class we learned how to volley a balloon in the air. Does anyone remember what some of the important things about volleying are? Good! Now today we are going to practice volleying with other people. Just like in a real volleyball game! This is going to be a lot of fun, but I am going to need everyone to follow my directions.

Content Development:

  • Review the basics of volleying that they learned in the last lesson.
  • When I say go I want you to see if you can make it all the way through the "ABC's" without letting your balloon hit the ground. Every time you hit the balloon, you move on to the next letter.
  • Now I want you to get with a partner and try to complete at least 5 hits with your partner without letting it touch the ground. Remember to keep your eyes on the balloon!
  • Now I am going to set up a "net" between you and your partner. I want you to practice hitting your balloon back and forth over the "net" just like in a real volleyball game.
  • Now, let's see who can hit their balloon back and forth 5 times without dropping it.
  • We are going to do the same thing, but this time you are competing with the other groups to see who can hit it back and forth 5 times the fastest.
  • Now I want you to try to hit it back and forth without letting it go out of your area.
  • Great job! Now we are going to try and hit it back and forth as many times as you can in 30 seconds. Are you ready? GO!

Culminating Activity:

1. For this activity the students will practice volleying a balloon as I call out different commands. The following commands will be given:
-Volley like a giraffe!
-Volley like a turtle!

-Volley while standing on one foot! Now the other foot!
-Volley on your knees!
-Volley with your eyes closed!
-Volley and try to clap as many times as you can between each hit!
-Volley and spin around while the balloon is in the air.

-Volley with one hand

-Volley with two hands

-Volley like a kangaroo

Closure:

What do kind of feet do we have to have when we are volleying with a partner? (ready feet) Why do we need our feet to be ready? (So that we can move to the balloon) What should our eyes always be doing? (watching the balloon).
