Scholarship Awareness
Students should spend time on the website of any college/university he or she has an interest in possibly attending. Click on the tab for financial aid, and there might also be a tab for scholarships. The criteria for any scholarship opportunities will be listed, and the deadlines to apply will be given. Those deadlines are firm, and students should give themselves plenty of time to apply, if they meet the criteria.
Also, a scholarship newsletter is made available to students each month in the wall pockets right outside the Career Center, and it is also on the NMHS website, listed under “Latest News”. The scholarships listed in the newsletter are only those which I receive information about via emails throughout the month. I strongly recommend that students/parents research scholarship opportunities on your own as well. The following websites are great resources:
www.collegeboard.com , www.act.org , www.finaid.org , www.collegenet.com , www.fastweb.com , www.gacollege411.org , www.blackexcel.som , www.minorityprofessionalnetwork.com , www.uncf.org
www.myscholly.com, www.latino.college.dollars.org, www.thurgoodmarshallfund.net
Students/Parents should also check with parent’s place of employment, as well as any church attended for possible scholarship opportunities.
A Change in Filing a FAFSA Application
In the past, Students and at least one Parent were required to obtain a pin number for electronic signing of their FAFSA Application. As of May, 2015, a pin is no longer required, and has been replaced with FSA ID’s. Students and at least one Parent should go to www.fafsa.gov., and select the blue link to create an ID, using a user name and a password. Confirmation from the Social Security Administration will be sent via your emails. This may take two to three days. Once confirmation is received, proceed with filling out the Free Application For Student Aid.
Also, once a student/parent applies for FAFSA (Free Application For Student Aid) beginning October 1, 2016, be sure to include in your FAFSA the FAFSA Codes for colleges you have an interest in attending. Each college has a specific FAFSA Code, and that can be easily found on the college’s website. After a student submits a college application for admission to a specific college, the admission office there will review that student’s FAFSA report, and will prepare an award letter to be sent to the student regarding what type of financial aid the student is entitled to. The financial aid given will include any free federal aid the student might be entitled to, as well as any other scholarships or grants which that specific college might award the student. Should the student choose to in fact go to said college, the student must sign the award letter and return it as soon as possible. Failure to return the signed award letter would result in forfeiture of any scholarship money awarded.
Important Deadlines:
If you are applying “early action” to the University of Georgia, remember that deadline is Oct. 15 (decision by Dec. 15). You need to give your counselors time to do your counselor evaluations, and order your official transcript ($3), at least one week prior to the Oct. 15 deadline.
Foundation Fellowship Scholarship and Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship Application Deadline: Nov. 2, 2016.
Academic Scholarships for first-year students are awarded during the Admissions Process.
Regular Application Deadline is Jan. 15 (decision no later than April 1, 2017). A student is evaluated for admission just as fairly as are students who apply “early action”.
Myth: Trying to get admitted to The University of Georgia is easier if a student applies for summer admission rather than trying to get admitted for fall semester.
Truth: Yes, your GPA and your SAT/ACT results are a part of the evaluating process for admission to The University of Georgia. However, just as important in the process, is the rigor of the classes you took in high school when being evaluated for admission!

College Visitation Days!
Two days are provided for seniors to visit colleges/universities, and/or technical colleges they are interested in attending. The two days are counted as Scheduled Activity (SA) days, not as absences. Seniors should see Mrs. Morris in the Career Center (D1113), to pick-up the required form for following the procedures to set up your two visits. The form must be filled out properly, and students must also bring proof from the Admissions Office of the college visited, that they were there. Students must turn in the form from the college, to their first period teacher on their day of returning to class. Failure to follow procedures will result in a student being counted absent rather than being counted present, but on a student activity day.
