PE and sport premium for RNIB Three Spires Academy 2016-17
Introduction
The Department for Education provided RNIB Three Spires Academy with a PE and Sports Premium in 2016-2017.The aim is to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities offered to pupils, and to give them the opportunity to develop a healthy lifestyle.
This year the school has taken significant steps forward in improving the level of sports and PE activities which take place at the school including:
1. Coventry Blaze – the second year of this National Lottery funded programme whereby two classes receive hockey or physical training delivered by coaches from this ice hockey team which includes time on the ice.
2. Wasps Rugby – we are linking with Wasps through their community programme and a 6 week block of rugby type activities will take place. Rugby also promotes FBV including the rule of law (referee’s word is law) along with respect.
3. Coventry City of Rugby – a new privately funded initiative which will bring together Wasps, Coventry and Coventry Bears, who will promote rugby across the city.
4. SEND Active – a network of Coventry and Warwickshire special schools which organises a range of PE and Sports activities. We have joined this network.
The PE and Sports Grant allocation for this academic year is £8,0914. Replacement of PE and Sports Equipment
Allocation of £1000 for PE and Sports grant to replace worn out PE equipment
5. Rebound Therapy
Project Details and Rationale
We will use this grant funding in five ways:
1. SEND Active
To join this network of PE and Sports activities for special schools
£600
2. PE and Sports Activities at Lunchtimes
An area of concern is that with the changing needs of the pupils who attend Three Spires, they need a greater level of support to engage in meaningful activity at lunchtimes. Whereas previously pupils were able to organise and enjoy activities such as football or other games with little staff input, today this is no longer the case. There is a need for greater organisation of physical activities during this time. Coventry Blaze, with whom we have an existing Lottery funded programme, will deliver twice weekly sessions for pupils at lunchtimes in a range of different activities, led by two sports tutors. An additional £800 has been allocated for the purchase of outside lunchtime PE equipment and storage for use by the sports tutors.
£3,800
3. CWS Active Workplace
We will be participating in this pilot project which will target improving pupils (and staff) fitness over a six month period. This project will commence with health/fitness tests for pupils and staff to establish a baseline, then a menu of activities that pupils and staff could take part in, as well as CPD, then fitness tests 6 months on to compare results.
£800 (not including staff costs)
To train 2 members of staff in rebound therapy including cover costs
£1,000
(A reserve of approximately £1k is held back to take advantage of opportunities which arise during the academic year.)

Sustainability
All the above programmes are sustainable in the long-term as the aim has been to use small amounts of the grant across a wide range of PE and Sports projects rather than one large project. If the amount of the grant were to be reduced, programmes could be tailored to fit the size of the grant allocated. We are also involved in other PE activities which have a zero budgetary impact such as hockey/ice hockey with Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Team and rugby skills training delivered by Wasps Rugby Community Team.
