Directory Guide and Employability Pipeline map

This Directory has been prepared by the Dumfries and Galloway Employability Partnership in the spring of 2011 and is under ongoing review. It summarises the returns from an electronic survey of identfied service providers in the area. This list of services was initially provided by participants in Employability Partnership development sessions, and was augmented by inviting all the organsiations contacted to suggest other relevant services.

It is recognised, however, that the directory will not be entirely comprehensive - some services will be missed, whilst others may already have changed. To respond to this continual evolution and development of services, the opportunity remains for services listed in the directory to update their entry, or for those that are ommitted at this point to be included. This can be done by contacting: Dawn Redpath, Dumfries and Galloway Council, Economic Development Unit on 01387 245192 or by e-mail to . Dawn holds a database of all survey returns which can be amended as required.

The services idenfified have been mapped against an employability pathway developed by the Dumfries and Galloway Employability Partnership. This mechansim provides a relatively simple way of demonstrating the contribution of each service in terms of helping people back into work and then sustainiing this progression. It is recognised this process will vary in terms of the support needed, and time over which this this will be required, by each participant. The 5 stages of the pipeline have been defined as follows:

Stage 1: Engagement – activities where the concept of employability can be gently introduced, often at a point of initial engagement where people engage for other reasons eg a health centre, addictions interventions; housing or debt related agencies etc.

Stage 2: Pre vocational support – the provision of support to address issues which are likely to cause barriers to subsequent labour market progression eg confidence building/motivational activities; literacy and numeracy support; addressing disclosure for offenders etc.

Stage 3: Vocational support – interventions more directly focused on a specific job outcome eg College programmes; training programmes (Get Ready for Work, Training for Work etc); tailored pathways programmes with employers etc. This stage may be the most appropriate point to plot Information, Advice and Guidance services (though these straddle a few parts of the pathway).

Stage 4: Into work support – support provided with a more immediate focus on job entry eg most Jobcentre Plus focused and DWP funded activities; and any discretionary funds providing immediate support to an identified job entry – clothes for work, training certificates needed to access a specific job opportunity etc.

Stage 5: In work support/retention – eg ongoing career development support; buddying/mentoring schemes; aftercare support packages linked to previous interventions; occupational health supports; Individual Learning Accounts etc.

All of services identified have now been initially plotted on this pathway, based on an asessment of where they appear to make the most significant impact, and on the types of outcomes they seek to achieve for clients. Again the scope remains to alter this as required through contacting Dawn Redpath as detailed above.

The Dumfries and Galloway Employability Partnership intends to use the information in the directory to inform future developmental decisions. Consequently, we are very keen to ensure it is as comprehensive and accurate as possible. This can only be done with the co-operation of the full range of local partners and services. Please take every opportunity to input, comment, and help us with this important task.

Description of service
Volunteer Action is the local Volunteer Centre. We work with volunteers across the region, helping them to identify appropriate volunteering activities. For some volunteers this is about gaining valuable experience for their CV, while developing skills, enhancing confidence and trying out different options. In addition, we offer a range of tools for volunteers to use, including a software package that helps to analyse their strengths and skills and identifies jobs that match those skills; and a self learning pack entitled Volunteering and Employability. We also offer a variety of generic training to volunteers registered with Volunteer Action which helps to increase their confidence, knowledge and skills
