New Contemplatives Initiative Scholarship and Bursary Award:

  • Full scholarship and bursary for Cultivating Compassion on the RiverConference tuition
  • Complimentary lodging in a shared hotel room Thursday, April 11, to Sunday, April 14 (three nights)
  • Award of up to USD$200 to assist with travel expenses (reimbursed with receipts)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants arefortyyears of age or under at the time of the application deadline
  • Applicants bring one or more years of experience as a participant in one-to-one or group spiritual companioning
  • Applicants bring one or more years of experience serving as a spiritual companion in one-to-one or group spiritual direction
  • Applicants have reviewed and acceptedthe New Contemplatives Initiative Participant Agreements (see below)

Participant Agreements:

If granted the SDI New Contemplatives Initiative Scholarship and Bursary Award I agree to the following terms:

  • I will accept Award by February 1, 2013 in writingand register for Cultivating Compassion on the River conference by March 15, 2013.
  • Before the conference, I will prepare a reflection on the conference theme of cultivating compassion (150 words maximum) and submit it to Helen Kwon, New Contemplatives Initiative facilitator, by March 15, 2013.
  • I accept the lodging options provided by SDI as part of the New Contemplatives Initiative (outlined above).
  • Within thirty days following the conference, I will submit receipts for up to USD$200 for reimbursement of travel expenses by Spiritual Directors International. Expenses eligible for reimbursement include costs for travel to and from the conference and meal expenses during the conference.
  • I will arrive and participate in an opening activity for New Contemplatives on Thursday, April 11.
  • Duringthe conference, I will attend all gatherings for New Contemplativesin addition to scheduledplenaries and workshops I select during registration.
  • On Sunday morning of the conference, I will participate in a New Contemplatives presentation at approximately 10:30 a.m. for thirty minutes.
  • Following the conference, I will complete and return to Helen Kwon, New Contemplatives Initiative facilitator, a brief post-conference reflection highlighting what I learned, offering specific recommendations for SDI’s ongoing education and mentoring of new contemplatives.

  • Commitment to continuing education and formation in the ministry and service of spiritual companioning;

  • Capacity to make a distinctive contribution to the New Contemplative learning community.
