Scene: Abortion clinic
Your brief description / key idea of scene
The 'Abortion Clinic' scene is vital to understand the rest of the movie, and it helps the audience understand the key idea that positive things can come from poor decisions and it also sets up the positive solution oriented tone of the rest of the film. This is the scene where Juno either decides to keep the baby, or decides she can't kill it; either way she decides against abortion. It symbolizes the value of human life among other things. The director uses several effective techniques such as aspects of the set, signposts in dialogue, extreme close ups, sound effects, cross cutting and a very clever montage.
Technique Example What it means
Dialogue / “Baby’s have fingernails” and Juno’s surprised reaction / Fingernails are smylboic and a fact that helps Juno ddecie to keep the baby, has not touhght about carrying a hmuan being, not a ‘thing’; also fingernails symbolise detail/delevoped body parts and hands which represent connection/touch/love/bond between two people (esp. mheotr ßà clhid)

Sound effect and close up / Links to Su Chin’s words and:
1.  make Juno reflect more on what a baby is (human) and develops doubts about ‘killing’ a human being
2.  reflects Juno’s internal state of mind = tension, growing doubt about her decision, confusion, panic
3.  finger nails are a motif linking Juno to her step mum and the baby
final slam of the door emphasizes her decision to stop the abortion which is a pivotal moment in the film and in Juno’s life
