Snare Drum: Percussionists will be asked to perform 3 rudiments of their choice from the following rudiments: (open-close-open) rudimental double stroke roll, Single flam Taps, Five stroke roll, Paradiddle, and (pianissimo to fortissimo to pianissimo at maximum controlled speed) The multiple bounce roll.

Percussionists will also be asked to perform excerpts of the band music which will demonstrate proficiency on the snare drum, mallets, and timpani. A separate copy of these excerpts is included in their folder in addition to their pre-assigned parts.

High School Honor Band Nomination Procedures and Instructions

  • Complete a separate cover sheet for each Honor Band (9-10 and 11-12).
  • Determine the total number of applicants possible: Divide the total number of band students in grades 9-12 by 8. This is the total number of students you can nominate for both bands combined.
  • For example: 75 students divided by 8 equals 9 maximum students submitted. You can choose the ration of 9-10 to 11-12 such as four 9-10 students and five 11-12 students.
  • You may submit a minimum of four students per band.
  • All schools must submit at least two students for each band.

Karl L. King Scholarship Auditions

The Karl L. King Scholarship auditions will be held at the NIACC campus in Mason City on Saturday, January 9, 2010. This event is being held in conjunction with the NCIBA High School Honor Band Festival.

The audition is open to any high school senior whose band director is a member of IBA and NCIBA. An applicant must be a student instrumentalist in an Iowa high school concert band and must be planning to major in Instrumental Music Education at a college or university in the state of Iowa during the 2010 to 2011 school year. Their instrument must be commonly used in standard concert band literature. If you have a question about this please contact Jeff Cook before submitting your application.

The selection process will consist of a solo performance, scale performance, sight reading, a music theory test, and an interview with the adjudicators. The student will need to provide his/her own accompanist and three copies of the solo for the judges.

General Preparations

  • The solo does not need to be memorized.
  • Know the common musical terms.
  • Be prepared to play from memory the chromatic scale and all major scales on your instrument over the normal playing range.
  • Be prepared to write all major and three forms of minor scales.
  • Know the simple elements of harmony and theory.
  • Understand simple transpositions relative to band instruments, such as what keys the

various instruments are built in, and how to make simple transpositions for band

instruments.

  • Know the alternate fingerings/positions for your instrument.
  • Be able to sight read accurately and musically.

The scholarship will consist of a $400.00 first place award and a Karl L. King Award Plaquewhich will be presented during the Honor Band Finale Concert. The second place winner will receive a $300.00 award, and the third place winner will receive $200.00. The first place winner is also eligible to compete in the Major Landers Scholarship Auditions, held in May at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention in

Des Moines.

The NCIBA High School Jazz Festival will be held on Saturday, December 5 at WebsterCityHigh School. There will be four (4) classes of competition, as determined by the Iowa High School Music Association. The top two NCIBA place winners in each class will qualify for the Iowa Jazz Championships in April. Trophies will be awarded for the top five bands in each class.

Certificates will be awarded for outstanding individual and/or section performances. There will be three judges with an additional clinician working with each band following the performance.

This contest has the official sanction of the Iowa High School Music Association.

Note: you must be a paid up member of both IBA and NCIBA to have your band participate in this event.

What:This is a clinic, not a contest, and no ratings or rankings will be involved. The basicpurpose of the clinic is to provide the opportunity for your students to perform in a noncompetitive atmosphere where a clinician will help solidify basic jazz band concepts. The clinic will also provide some insight into what other schools are doing in this idiom.

Who:AllMiddle School and Junior High Jazz Bands are welcome and encouraged to participate no matter how experienced or inexperienced the band is, provided that you, the director, are a member of NCIBA and IBA. It is truly an educational and valuable experience for both you and your students.

Where:The host for this year's Middle School Jazz Band Clinic will be Tammy Aberson at ClearLakeMiddle School in ClearLake.

When:The clinic will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

Format: A format similar to past clinics will be used. Each band will play a few selections (threework well), and then receive comments and suggestions from the clinician. The total time allotted to each band will be 30 minutes.

Cost:A $30.00 entry fee is all that's required to participate, and a maximum of 16 bands willbe scheduled to perform. Please fill out the registration formand sent it and your entry fee no later than January 8.

There will be two sites for this event. One is PrairieValleyMiddle School at Farnhamville, on Thursday, February 25, hosted by Jen Martino. The other is ForestCityHigh School, on Friday, February 26, hosted by David Rutt. Any Middle School/Junior High or ElementarySchool Band may participate in this worthwhile activity, provided the director is a paid memberof both NCIBA and IBA.

The format for the day will involve your band playing a few selections (usually three), then allowing time for clinician(s) to work with your students. Each band will receive 30 minutes for all of this. The clinician(s) may also provide written comments, cassette tapes, or video tapes of your performance. This can be a very worthwhile and fun activity for your students, as well as being a very educational day.

This year we will host our fourth High School Concert Band Festival. This is a non-competitive festival in which each band will perform for a panel of three judges, receive written/taped comments from all judges, and receive a clinic from at least one of the adjudicators. The goal is to create a learning situation that will help our groups improve and reach a new level of performance earlier in the school year.

Each band will have 60 minutes on the NIACC stage. This includes set-up, performance, clinic, and tear-down. We will schedule times during the day on Friday. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
