December 8, 2015

Call to Order: SBS Chair Meeting was held on December 8, 2015 at Canyons Hall 201. It began at 4 o’ clock and was presided over by Paul Wickline, with Lisette Godinez as secretary. Went over by half-hour.

Attendance: Victoria Leonard, Renee Marshall, David Andrus, Sherrill Pennington, Tamara Stokes-Rice, Kathryn Coleman, Anne Marenco, and most of SBS FTF. Kicenski, late 5pm arrival.

Introduction:There will be hot chocolate and other treats in SECO 307 all day Wednesday and Thursday as a thank you and in preparation for finals. Paul thanks SBS for an exciting, illuminating opportunity, and for the faculty’s graciousness, and patience, with all issues as interim Dean for this important school. Paul didn’t understand just how much is done for this school’s students until this year, and it is much appreciated.

Reminder that grades are due 72 hours after finals, but Tuesday evening, December 16 by 11:59 p.m.

Chairs have reviewed budget requests, and conversations were held one-on-one. Additional allocations were made, which Chairs were notified. This is a one-time money awarded to certain departments, as well as to other schools. Requests such as money for conference travel, can now be covered.

Enrollment: Classes capped at 15. Chairs will consider any classes that should be substituted, cancelled, or if another section should be added. Decisions have to be made soon about those classes. Academic Affairs would rather not have instructors wait until the week before about classes, due to contracts, but Paul can monitor on their behalf, and work with department chairs. In the past students usually wait until the end because they have to pay right away, or because they didn’t know they failed. Academic Affairs is concerned about efficiency, which has dropped.

Plea made for more SBS participation in the Enrollment Management Committee which meets once or twice a month.

Introduction made of Lisette Godinez to SBS. She can assist with any spreadsheets, form, tracking, to better aid to the success of the school. Lisette can work in Adobe, SharePoint and is a quick learner, as well as tech-savvy.

Objectives:Stickers passed out for Colored Dot Activity. Objectives posted along the wall for the next Educational & Facilities Master Plan. There is a “rough” rough draft Paul has been working on, and school-level interests and needs. He needs faculty input about the 3-5 year objectives to prioritize them and focus for the school.

Objectives prioritized by SBS School:

  • Provide support for students and enhance student engagement by helping secure additional full-time faculty positions for SBS departments.
  • Provide increased support for department chairs by securing course/assessment coordinator positions and utilizing a School SLO Facilitator to assist with SLO workload (and other issues).
  • Refurnish classrooms with easily configurable furniture to meet pedagogical needs (resistant to gum placement).
  • Follow up with Jerry about classroom equipment that works.
  • Maintaining currency in our discipline specific fields through Memberships & Travel
  • Support student clubs
  • More support/funds.
  • Updating & upgrading instructional & non-instructional equipment (ex. scanners).
  • Issues w/ 2nd floor SECO copier – needs upgrade. 3rd floor copier available.
  • Armed police force 24 hrs/day.
  • Concern for teachers who are on the front-lines, along with students when it comes to college shooters.
  • Safety is a BIG issue in the classrooms, while instructors feel it is not a big issue on an administrative level.
  • Requests for metal detectors, bomb-sniffing dogs, or allow staff to carry arms.
  • Support to address the mental health issues of our students.
  • More mental health awareness or mental health issues
  • Promote collaboration with student health awareness and promoting awareness/collaboration with student services already in place
  • When do certain issues (drug/violence) go beyond “mental health issues”? More collaboration and teaching needed.
  • Acquire space and resources to create a SBS computer lab/study area for use by all departments’ faculty and students.
  • Improve student learning and student engagement by securing ongoing support for the Model United Nations and Forensic Teams

Assessment: Opportunity for study in liberal arts and social sciences associate degrees (6-7 degrees). 183 people received this degree. It is a volunteer for the Faculty Assessment Team, need 5-7 faculty (adjunct okay), that can review the assessments and volunteers will be paid. Will occur in the spring. There is no official program review yet. More information to follow.

Senate: Victoria reports on safety issues in Senate. Rebecca reported lock changes for those inside the classroom. They will be changed within a year so they can be locked on the inside. Glass in classrooms have not been looked into, but there is talk of a film that can be placed to make it bulletproof. However it will be sent to safety committee. There is no clear answer on when they will hear about armed gun control on campus.

Level of mental health issues higher than ever this term. Not sure why or how, but it is a huge concern.

There is a team of 19 individual that went to Portland Community College about a “maker space” for the community, and school where they would have a 3D printer, die-cut machine, and other.

Would like new faculty to join committees.

There was a memo sent out to review vacant-full time positions.

Board of Trustees Re-district has adopted Map A.

Last time an issue came up over was a new policy for sexual harassment. There is now new mandatory training, online for this. Concerns were voiced that it is not enough. Diane Fiero is open to being a part of the conversation and to addressing this issue. It is not enough to undergo online training. There should be more of a guideline, or process. However, this is a part of a new policy and guidelines are being set up across the nation to lay a foundation to address violence, even if it is off-campus, and that will allow school investigation and due-process to be followed.
