Saving Homeless Pets Across America

March, 2016 - Part-time Veterinarian Position in Salem, MA

Northeast Animal Shelter seeks a part-time veterinarian to join our team, for 8 to 15 hours per week. The ability to work weekends is desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience and a keen interest in shelter work.

Our Shelter is a nationally recognized nonprofit no-kill shelter for cats and dogs, operating out of a modern 13,000 sf building in Salem, MA. We will soon be adding a 5,000 sf addition to be able to house more pets in quarantine, as well as a surgical suite, primarily for dental, although spay/neuter surgeries will be considered in the future.

Each month we place approximately 400 cats and dogs with adopters. Many of these pets are rescued from high-kill shelters in the South, and transported to us in air-conditioned specially equipped vans. Most adopters live in eastern Massachusetts, but as our reputation grows, adopters are starting to travel to us from southeastern and central Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

We have approximately 70 employees, including part-time. We have over 200 volunteers, each of whom spend at least 4 hours per week walking and socializing animals and cleaning.

We wish to provide high quality medical care to our shelter guests. We presently employ one veterinarian, who is supported by a small clinic staff. We rely on local veterinarians for spay/neuter, surgeries, as well as back up for official health evaluations as required by the state when our veterinarian is unavailable.

Our present building has 3 isolation rooms to comply with the state’s 48 hour isolation requirement for out-of-state pets. In addition, we have a sick-dog isolation room, 3 public viewing rooms for dogs, and various other rooms for cats.

Typically, the medical issues we see are URI, kennel cough, worms, fleas, mites, Giardia, and Coccidia. Less frequently, we see canine influenza, mange, parvo, distemper, metabolic disorders, and orthopedic problems.

From time-to-timesome of our dogsbecome sick with parvo or distemper after arrival, even though they have received at least 2 DHPP shots prior to transport. With quick action, many dogs with parvo recover, but we want to make sure we operate in the most responsible manner to minimize the chances of contagion. Our protocol is to isolate all pets on the same transport for at least 14 days when one pet in the shipment is diagnosed with a contagious disease.

If you join our team, you will be working mostly during the days when our full-time veterinarian is off. Your job will involve examinations, diagnosis, prescribing medication, and administering shots. If you want to do dentals, hours can be expanded. We typically house 20 to 50 felines, and 25 to 100 canines. Sometimes we receive up to 70 puppies and dogs in one shipment, and on those occasions our in-house population is at capacity and the workload temporarily increases.

We will consider a recent graduate, but preference will be given to candidates with experience.
