Introduction
In day to day observations, we happen to meet some extraordinary individuals, who are master of a particular field or subject but otherwise mentally retarded, dwarf, dull or autistic. These persons are otherwise innocent and work with strange brilliance in a single field. They may, therefore, be used as robots to accomplish a specific task, which may be constructive, as seen with some scientists, researchers or a few super specialists, as well as destructive, as seen with most of the terrorists or criminals. Such individuals are often unsocial, antisocial or alienated (Psora/ Syphilis).
Definition
A person affected with a mental disability like autism or mental retardation, who exhibits exceptional skill or brilliance in some limited field, as mathematics or music etc. is called an idiot savant and the condition as Savant Syndrome (Psora/ Syphilis).
Thus, Savant Syndrome can be defined as a rare but extraordinary condition, in which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some “island of genius” rendering him to be exceptionally genius in one particular field.
Etymology
Savant–French- savoir- to know or knowledgeable person
Previously, savant syndromewas called as idiotsavant or autistic savant. For dignity and honor, the term idiot savant was deleted. Savant syndrome is preferable to autisticsavant, since only about 50% of persons withsavant syndrome have autistic spectrum disorder, whilethe other 50% have some other forms of CNS injury ordisease (Causa occasionalis/ Psora/ Syphilis).
Epidemiology
Mental retardation and other forms of developmental disability are more common than autistic disorder, so about 50% of persons with savant syndrome have autistic disorder and the other 50% have other forms of developmental disability, mental retardation or other CNS injury or disease. Thus, not all autistic persons have savant syndrome, and not all persons with savant syndrome have autistic disorder.
Males are more affected by autism and savant syndrome. There are some facts in support of this ratio-
- Left hemisphere completes its development after the right hemisphere
- Left hemisphere is subjected to prenatal influences
- Particularly in the male fetus, circulating testosterone, which can reach very high levels, may slow growth and impair neuronal function in left hemisphere
- Underdevelopment of left hemisphere causes actual enlargement of the right hemisphere
- Skills associated with right hemisphere get shifted to it due it its predominance
- Compensatory growth in the right brain as a result of impaired development or actual injury to the left brain causes high male: female ratio in disorders, including autism (left hemisphere dysfunction is often seen in autism)
- Several conditions like dyslexia, delayed speech, and stuttering may be explained as above
Pathophysiology
Savant syndrome occurs in some developmental disabilities (Psora/ Syphilis) or CNS injury (Causa occassionalis) or disease as well.Paradoxical functional facilitation caused by selective degeneration of anterior temporal and orbitofrontalcortices (Syphilis), mainly left, leads to decreased inhibition of visual systems involved with perception, thereby enhancing artistic interest and abilities. The anatomic substrate for the savant syndrome may involve loss of function in the left temporal lobe with enhanced function of the posterior cortex (Psora).
It is possible that a gene, or genes,in the chromosome 15q11-13 region (the same gene responsible for Prader Willi Syndrome) may be responsible for this syndrome (Syphilis).
Savant memory is characteristically very deep, but exceedingly narrow, within thelimits of the accompanying special skill. Savant skills typically continue, rather than disappear, and with continued use, the special abilitieseither persist at the same level or really increase.
Skills related to right hemisphere-
- Artistic
- Concrete
- directly perceived
- Non-symbolic
Skills related to left hemisphere-
- Language specialization
- Logical
- More sequential
- Symbolic
Types
Savant syndrome can be congenital or acquired-
Congenital savant
It may be due to defective fetal brain development, birth injuries or genetic (Causa occasionalis/ Syphilis).
Acquired Savant
It develops following brain injury or disease later in infancy, childhood, or adult life. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) may lead to acquire new artistic skills with the onset and progression of FTD. Neuroimaging studies may show dominant left hemisphere injury and dysfunction (Psora/ Syphilis/ Causa occassionalis).
Causes
- Birth trauma (Causa occassionalis)
- Brain trauma (Causa occassionalis)
- Defects during fetal development (Psora/ Syphilis)
- Genetic (Syphilis)
- Idiopathic (Psora)
Signs and symptoms
Savant skills typically appear within afew special abilities like-
Music
May perform as a perfect musician and with ability with multiple instruments.
Art
Extraordinary ability for drawing, painting or sculpting.
Calendar calculating
Can remember and calculate for very long times.
Mathematics
May have theunusual ability to compute prime numbers, inthe absence of other simple arithmetic abilities.
Mechanical or spatial skills
May have the capacityto measure distances precisely without instruments andthe ability to construct complex modelsor structures with high accuracy. Others may be mastersof mapmaking and direction-finding.
Other examples of savant syndrome are-
- Memorization of music and sports particulars, license plate numbers, maps, historical facts or obscure items such as vacuum cleaner motor sounds etc.
- Outstanding knowledge in specificfields such as neurophysiology, statistics or navigation etc.
- Perfect appreciation of passing time without seeing clock
- Polyglotism - Knowledge of multiple languages
- Synesthesia - a perceptual condition of mixed sensations- a stimulus in one sensory modality (e.g. hearing) involuntarily elicits a sensation/experience in another modality (e.g. vision)
- Unusual judgement in smell, touch or vision
Sometimes, several abilities may run simultaneously.
Diagnosis
- PET, SPECT, andfMRI.
- Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and direct fibertracking
Treatment
Psychotherapy
Psychological counselling may play a very good role in balancing the behavior.
Physiotherapy/ occupational therapy
These become an essential tool to reduce the physical debility in effected persons.
Homoeopathic treatment
