Oral Book Report – Non-Fiction
50 points
Overall, your goal is to inform the class of the person about whom you read and to give a brief analysis of his/her story. You must include the following in your 5-7 minute report to class:
1) Give a brief plot summary of the biography/autobiography without giving away the ending. This is just telling the series of the IMPORTANT events, but make sure you include the title, copyright date, author’s name, and what part of the subject’s life the story covers first.
2) Briefly analyze some important character trait(s) of your subject. Base your analysis on two or three specific incidents from the story (in other words, give EXAMPLES of the trait AND explain).
3) Give the class a brief reading from the work. This excerpt should be no less than ¼ page. Please give the CONTEXT (setting and action that precedes your quote) before you read it to class, so we can better understand your excerpt.
4) Compare and/or contrast the subject and/or his/her life to another real life person that you know or have read about. OR, if you can relate to the subject, give a specific life experience that you have had that is similar to the subject’s. Either way, explain the connection to us.
5) Incorporate some kind of visual aide into your presentation. This could be a PowerPoint, Prezi, poster, drawing, etc., but it needs to be large enough for us all to see it.
Please stay within the time constraints: less than 5 minutes loses points; more than 8-9 minutes and I will stop you. Also, please balance your report to cover the five items above. You may want to practice at home BEFORE you present to class.
If you need help with some aspect of this assignment, come to see me during Conference and we can talk, but don’t wait until the last minute.
Good luck and have FUN!
