SANTIAGO CANYON COLLEGE HOSTS FREE

LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL

September 8—The community is invited to attend the annual Latin American film festival hosted by Santiago Canyon College’s Languages Department. The free film showings will be held on Friday evenings in October (October 7, 14 and 21) at 6:00 p.m. in building D, room 101.

In addition to free admission, complimentary parking and refreshments also are provided. Faculty members from the languages department will introduce the following films and lead discussion afterward:

·  Friday, October 7: DIARIOS DE MOTOCICLETA/MOTORCYCLE DIARIES (Multi- national collaboration, 2004, Spanish with English subtitles, R)—This is the true story Che Guevara’s personal odyssey traveling across South America on a motorcycle. In 1951-52, Guevara was a 23-year-old medical student from Argentina when he took the journey that would ultimately inspire him to become a revolutionary who had a profound impact on history. Winner of several prestigious awards including the Golden Globe Award in 2004.

·  Friday, October 14: NADA/NOTHING (Cuba, 2001, Spanish with English subtitles, not rated)—This film is a comic look at how the Cuban government affects its citizens. It focuses on a female postal worker who dreams of living with her parents in Miami, while she livens up her existence through correspondence. Winner of several awards including the Goya Award in 2002.

Santiago Canyon College Hosts Free Latin American Film Festival 2 of 2

·  Friday, October 21: CILANTRO Y PEREJIL/CILANTRO AND PARSLEY (México, 1995, Spanish with English subtitles, PG-13)—A young female student makes a documentary about her sister’s marital difficulties in hopes of shedding light on the travails of modern romance. While the film is a comedy about romance, it also examines Mexican culture and traditional morality. Winner of several awards including the prestigious Ariel Award.

The college is located at 8045 E. Chapman Avenue in Orange, at the corner of Chapman and Newport Boulevard. Free parking is available in lot 1.
