1How did the French and Indian War help start the American Revolution ?
Colonists were upset that they were being singled out to pay for the war instead
of a unified England paying together. They were also upset that that King George
issued the Proclamation of 1763 stating no one was allowed to settle west of the
Appalachian Mountains
2 Name some reasons why the American Revolution happened.
Stamp Act, Quartering Act, Sugar Act, Townshend Acts, Writs of Assistance
Boston Massacre, lack of representation of the colonists in Parliament and the
Intolerable Acts
3 What is the Proclamation of 1763 ? Why did it upset the colonists?
An order in which Britain prohibited its American colonists from settling west
of the Appalachian Mountains due to the high cost of protecting those settlers
4 What is a boycott, and how was it used by the colonists ?Page 145
It is a refusal to buy goods. The colonists used it in retaliation of the Stamp Act
by stopping their purchase of English made goods.

King of England who was at constant odds with the colonists of the Americas.
6 Revenue –Page 144
Is another name for money or for income. This revenue was greatly needed by
the British to pay off war debts for the French and Indian War.
7 Sugar Act – Page 144
A law placed a tax on sugar, molasses, and other products shipped to the
colonies. It also called for strict enforcement of the act and harsh punishment of
smugglers.

8 Describe what the Townshend Acts were Page 147
The Townshend Acts were named after King George’s financial minister Charles
Townshend. The Townshend Acts were created to raise revenue for England.
Taxes were imposed “placed” on various goods like glass, paper, paint, lead and
tea. England thought these acts would cause less anger than the Stamp Act. They
were wrong !
9 What was the Tea Act ?Page 150
Passed in 1773 by Parliament. The Tea Act gave the British East India Company
exclusive control over the American tea trade. American colonists were
outraged by this new tax on tea.
10 What was the Boston Tea Party ?Page 151
It was a reaction to the Tea Act tax. The Sons of Libertyon December 16, 1773
disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and boarded tea ships docked in
Boston Harbor. They destroyed 342 chests of tea valued by today’s cost of living
in America at a little over 2.5 million dollars. This event was seen by some as an
act of terrorism and others saw it as act of patriotism

Crispus Attuckswas an African American / Native American sailor who was
killed during the Boston Massacre. He was the fist person of color to be killed in
the colonists struggle for independence.
12 What were writs of assistance ?Page 147 – 148
Writs of assistance were search warrants used by British soldiers to enter
homes or businesses to search for smuggled goods. The writs of assistance
were used to enforce the Townshend Acts.
13 Describe Sam Adam’s contributions before the war. Page 148-148 & page 150
Protestor of the Townshend Acts. He was also the leader of the Boston’s Sons of
Liberty. He was a strong resistor of British control. He is famous for his quote
saying “We will destroy every soldier that dares put his foot on shore…… I look
upon them as foreign enemies.” Sam Adams was fiery person who was a master
of propaganda and motivating people for the Revolutionary cause. He was
responsible for creating a spy network for the colonists.
14 What happened at the Boston Massacre ?Page 149
It was a clash between British soldiers and Boston colonists in 1770, where five
Boston colonists were gunned down. The soldiers were tried for murder,
defended by John Adams and found not guilty due to them appropriately using
self-defense. This event was a major piece of propaganda circulated throughout
the colonies by the famous engraving created by Paul Revere.
SECTION THREE Readings for October 10th /Creating America Book pp. 152-157
15 Describe the Intolerable Acts.Page 154 – 155
A series of laws created by Parliament to punish the Massachusetts colony for
the Boston Tea Party. These Intolerable Acts were also known as the Coercive
Acts. 1) Boston Harbor shutdown until was paid for 2) Committees of
Corespondence were banned 3) British officials accused of crimes would be
tried in England and 4) General Thomas Gage was appointed governor of
Massachusetts to oversee these changes.
