SANS 10400 Part U – Refuse Disposal

The following document serves as a summary of SANS 10400 – Part U. It does not in anyway replace the contents of the actual document.

The provisions made in SANS 10400 are unfortunately vague and does provide sufficient guidelines or recommendations for its applications.

The following should give some clarity in the application of Part U of SANS 10400.

Every dwelling house, public building, residential building, industrial building or shop must provide on its site a refuse storage area on which refuse receptacles shall be placed.

This area must be sited to the satisfaction of the local municipality Health Department , at street level or at such other level and in such a position as in his opinion will afford convenient access from within the building and from the street. The health department generally recommends that refuse areas be built within the site, along the road side for easy access by the refuse contractor at all times.

The following are the minimum requirements when designing or providing a Refuse Bin Area.

The bin area for a dwelling house shall not be less than 1sqm

All other buildings shall not be less than 9.3sqm, with a minimum width of 1.8m for a floor area of the building of up to 4654sqm. For floor areas greater than 4654sqm, please refer to the table below.

A minimum width of 2.15m and ceiling height of 2.4m must be maintained.

The bin area must have a minimum 100mm kerb and be at least 100mm above the surrounding surface.

The surface must be paved with an approved impervious material

The surface must be graded to a gulley which must be fitted with a removable grate. The gulley must connect to the sewer line.

A standpipe must be fitted over the gulley.

No Stormwater must be discharged into a bin area and no bin area is allowed to drain into a Stormwater line.

The bin area must be suitably lit

A bin area must be suitably screened from the road and surrounding properties.

Internal walls must be plastered to a height of 1.8m high.

A bin area must be roofed and rodent proof, provided with vermin proof material over all openings.. A minimum of two air bricks must be provided.

A bin area must accessible at all times from within the property

A communal bin area shall be provided in multi tenancy buildings.
