2008 Scholarship Application

For Graduating Seniors in the San DiegoUnified School District

The San Diego Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation awards a minimum of four scholarships each year:

One scholarship for $7,500 in honor of San Diego civic leader, the Reverend George Walker Smith.

One scholarship for $7,500 in honor of San Diegobusiness and civic leader, Tom Carter.

Two scholarships for $5,000 each in memory of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

All of the scholarships commemorate the personal commitment to justice and equality and the spirit of community service exemplified by these civic-minded Americans.

The scholarships may be used at any four-year, fully accredited college or university of the recipient’s choice. Scholarship funds are paid directly to the college in prorated, annual installments over a four to five year period. (The total scholarship award must be used within five years of initial receipt of the award). Recipients are required to maintain a college grade point average of 2.5 or better.

This application process is open to graduating high school seniors attending high schools within the San DiegoUnifiedSchool District. Students wishing to be considered for either scholarship should submit a single application packet that includes the completed application, official high school transcript, and twoletters of recommendation from persons not related to you, including one from your school and one from a person with knowledge of your communityservice/involvement. Recipients will be selected through a competitive process that includes review of academic standing, financial need, extra-curricular activities, and demonstration of personal qualities and commitment of service to others.

Eligibility and Qualifications

To be eligible, applicant must be a graduating senior enrolled in a high school within the San DiegoUnifiedSchool District. To qualify, a student must show evidence of academic standing, involvement in extra curricular activities, financial need, and commitment to equality and service to others as reflected in the lives of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Reverend George Walker Smith, and Tom Carter. Preference may be given to students planning to attend member colleges of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).

Instructions

Please complete this application as thoroughly as possible and return it by the deadline with your complete high school transcript and two letters of recommendation from different persons not related to you, including one from your school and one from a person with knowledge of your community service/involvement. (Materials will not be returned)

Applications should be typed or printed neatly in black ink. Use additional paper if necessary.

Your response to Part V should not exceed two pages.

It is anticipated that winners will be announced by June, 2008.

Applications and all supporting materials become the property of the San Diego Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation, which shall have discretional authority in all matters pertaining to these scholarships.
