Samuels Elementary PTA Minutes

  • The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m.

Peggy Lehman-Update on Tamarac Square

  • Peggy provided some back ground information on Tamarac Square which is owned by a company located in Ohio. They are planning on taking down the main building. They will be leaving the strip mall area. All the tenants with the exception of Rodney’s and Ace Hardware have moved out. Ace Hardware will be moving to the strip mall. They are working with Rodney’s.
  • There will be a Chick-Fil-A coming and will be located near US Bank.
  • At this time they are unsure of what will be going in where Tamarac Square was located. There are drainage issues that need to be solved.
  • Peggy will be meeting with Bo Martinez, who does retail surveys, she will be asking if her district can be a test district.
  • Peggy is concerned with the retail leakage that has been happening. This is the term she used for the retail that has moved out.

Approval of minutes

  • November 2010 minutes were approved.

Totes of Hope

  • Debbie Grace provided an update. We are on our third distribution of 30 backpacks each. The next distribution will increase to 45 totes. Debbie has been handling the assembly in order to gain a better idea of how things are going and what is needed. The food is received on Tuesday and the totes go out by the weekend. She will be asking for volunteers to help with assembly.

Love and Logic classes

  • These will be Tuesday nights in February and March from 6:00-8:00 pm. They will be held at Samuels. The classes will be offered in English and Spanish. The classes are being taught by a mother/daughter team. We need to have a minimum of 15 people signed up for the classes.

Upcoming Events

  • Science Fair-takes place on January 26 and the awards will be given out on January 27th. This year the top 5 projects from each class will be passed on to the judges.
  • Family Dinner- scheduled for February 17th. The menu will change to tacos, bean and rice this year from Italian that we have done for the last two years. The first flyer will go out on January 27th. They family dinner will be combined with Literacy night. The 5th grade will be providing the center pieces.

Coordinators Needed

  • Fund Raiser Committee-we are looking for 4 individuals to make up this committee. They will determine what fund raiser we will do next year.
  • Spring Fling-will take place on March 24th. Student Council would like to help with the dance. Chandra Venrick provided a name for possible DJ’s. We will check with Student Council to see if they are able to write a letter to Student Council.
  • Staff Appreciation Lunch
  • Denver Duck Drop- we are looking for volunteers, including those willing to do face painting

Treasurers Report

  • Vicky provided a handout and reviewed each line item.

Believe

  • Cecilia provided an update. We had 190 orders, 25 internet orders and 36 students went on the limousine lunch.

Box Tops Update

  • 4th grade won for November.
  • A new contest just started and will run for 2 weeks.

McTeacher’s Night

  • We raised $294.78. It was fun and we are planning on doing this again next year.

Be the Love Foundation

  • Sunny Posey reported for Mark Fabian. The toy distribution in December went well and they received a lot of good feedback. They are planning on doing food baskets for spring break because the food bank does not cover this period.

Principal’s Report

  • The budget conversations have begun. It appears that there will be a 2% budget cut. On February 4 we should receive the actual budget numbers. At the next meeting Jim Kimbrough will have more information to pass on.
  • ESL numbers have almost doubled in the last two years.

Questions

  • There was discussion on different ways to inform parents of upcoming events and PTA meetings. Some of the possible ideas are sending emails, evites or phone calls. The PTA is open to hear all ideas and suggestions.
  • The next meeting was rescheduled due to a conflict with the 2nd grade performance. The next meeting will take place on Thursday February 10.
