Suggestion A: Find the fastest runner in the class over a distance of 2 km.

Possible steps – decide where – how – date – schedule – organize distance – organize equipment – decide on records to be kept and method of recording – get class agreement – run heats – run final – write up record and give oral presentation to class.

Possible method Having made and recorded the decisions suggested in possible steps, use a trundle wheel to accurately mark out a 2 km distance (may be a circuit) and place markers at the start and finish. Organise a starter and someone to confirm with you, the timekeeper, who the winner, in each case is. Organise a stop watch and ensure you are fully familiar with how it operates. Run a trial or two to be sure. Make out your list for the heats. Run the heats and the final, keeping records as they proceed. Calculate average speeds. Calculate the speed in km per hour of the winning time.

Possible things to recordAll the things you had to do to organise the event. Names of contestants in each heat – winner and time for each heat – average time for winners in the heats – time taken by winner of the final – speed of winner.

Oral Presentation (from written report). What you set out to do – what plans you had to make – what responsibilities you had to take – where you got equipment – who helped – what made it difficult – what made it easy – what problems were encountered and what solutions were found – was it exciting or boring – thank those who helped – congratulate all contestants and maybe a little prize for the winner.

Alternatives Monitor a dog, horse or person race on TV over a known distance. Go through a similar procedure for steps, planning, method, recording and presentation. Maybe do a few races and comparisons, averages and fastest time for the meeting. Conversion from furlongs to miles to km may be required – build this in. Write report and give oral presentation to class
