Summer Developments

New windows were installed in the school over the summerunder the Summer Works Scheme grant. An interactive whiteboard was installed in the 4th/5th/6th classroom and plans are afoot to have the other two classrooms kitted out in the new year.

Fr. Gerard

Best wishes to Fr. Gerard Cassidy who went on sabbatical in September. He served as chairperson of the Board of Management from September 2002 to February 2008and worked tirelessly for the school.

Fr. Sean

Welcome to the new parish priest, Fr. Sean Mawn.

Cumann na mBunscoil 7 a-side competition

On October 13th. the school team travelled to Drumshanbo to play in a primary school 7 a-side tournament. Following defeats to DrumshanboN.S. andDrumcong N.S. and a victory over Drumkeerin we exited the competition. Thanks to the parents who provided transport on the day.

GAA Coaching

On Mondays the school is visited by GAA coach, Jimmy Houlihan. Jimmy takes every class for coaching in Gaelic football skills.

Clothes Collection

A clothes collection was held on November 26th. The proceeds (€60) were divided between the school and St. Luke’s Hospital, Dublin. Thanks to all who contributed to the collection.

Community Connections

The school was visited by Hayley Fox-Roberts, a community arts facilitator on Thursday, November 26th. She gave a workshop on ‘equality and community’ to the pupils of 4th, 5th and 6th. The workshop ended with the pupils creating a banner from different types of material.

Enrolment Mass

AnEnrolment Mass was held in Saint Hugh’s Church, Ballinaglera for the pupils receiving the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation. The Confirmation ceremony will take place on Friday, March 26th in Glangevlin while First Communion will take place on Saturday, May 15th in St. Hugh’s Church, Ballinaglera.

Christmas Concert

On Friday, December 18ththe school’s Christmas concert was held in Ballinaglera Community Hall. The pupils of First-Sixth class performed songs from the musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing TechnicolourDreamcoat.’ The pupils of Junior Senior Infants then put on a great show with ‘The Wriggly Nativity Play’.

We are indebted to ‘director’ Aedín McLoughlin, for the huge effort she has put in over the last two months,to Liam McLoughlin for his workwith the sound and to Eva Delimata for her fantastic work designing the costumes.,

A big thanks also to Pat Costello for ferrying the pupils up and down to the hall for rehearsals, make-up artists, Isabella Bazanni and Andy King, Teresa McTigue for help with the costumes, the parents for putting the costumes together and everyone else who gave us a hand!Finally, well done to the pupils for their hard work and fantastic performances.

Raffle

The draw for this year’s raffle was held at the Christmas concert. Thanks to everyone who went out and sold tickets and to everyone who bought tickets. Special mention must go to Ryan Crawford and Wayne Reynolds (both 6th class) who sold €1150 of tickets between them The following were the winners of the raffle: 1s Prize (€200): Clare Feeney, Corry, 2nd Prize (€75):Oliver Lee, Drumshanbo,

3rd Prize: Thomas Forde, Ballinaglera. A profit of €2320was made from the fundraiser. The proceeds of the raffle will go towards a small extension to the school which will replace the present prefab.

The school has recently launched a website,‘sainthughs.com’. Among other purposes, the website will display photographs of the work of the pupils and events they are involved in.

School Choir

The school choir performed at the recent carol service in Saint Hugh’s Church, Ballinaglera on Sunday, December 20th.Thanks toAedín McLoughlin for her great work in preparing the choir and well done to all the pupils involved.
