Safeguarding training dates: September 2014- April 2015

Safeguarding Children & Vulnerable Adults

Training for children’s leaders, Sunday school teachers, Messy Church leaders, youth leaders, home group leaders, lunch club helpers, clergy, Parish Co-ordinator for Adults, interested PCC members, tower captain, choir leader, organist, church wardens, CPC’s and all others who work with children and young people or vulnerable adults in churches.

This 2¼ hour course is an introduction to Safeguarding required for anyone working with children (0-18) or adults in a church setting. It applies to both voluntary and paid positions. The course looks at basic definitions of abuse and how this might be recognised through a role within the church. It will provide guidance on good practice when working with children and vulnerable adults, and what to do if a safeguarding issue arises. It is essential to attend this training every three years to keep up to date. An attendance certificate is available on request.

Newly Appointed Parish Co-ordinator Training

For newly appointed parish child or vulnerable adult protection co-ordinators and clergy

Thursday 16th October at 7.15pm in Room 3, Church House, Full Street, Derby DE1 3DR

This 2 ½ hour course is required for those who are newly appointed as Parish Co-ordinators for children and/or vulnerable adults. It can also act as a refresher to those who have been undertaking the role for some time, but have not received training within three years. The course will cover the key requirements of the role and how the Diocese and parishes can support the person in post.

Advanced Child Protection Course

Monday 10th November at 7.15pm at Church House, Full Street, Derby, DE1 3DR

This 2 ½ hour course is required training for all those who lead volunteers working with children (0-18). It is also available for those who have completed the Basic Safeguarding Course but wish to explore the subject in greater depth. The course covers the relevant legislation and Diocesan procedures that will impact on church activities and will go through, in detail, how referrals are made to statutory agencies.

Advanced Vulnerable Adult Training

It is also available for those who have completed the Basic Safeguarding Course but wish to explore the subject in greater depth. Specific Issue Training

Risk Management and Risk Assessment in Churches

Tuesday 4th November at St Thomas Centre, Brampton, Chesterfield S40 3AW

This 2 ¼ hour course is open to clergy, youth and Childrens leaders, members of the PCC and Child or Adult Protection Co-ordinators. We will explore the risks associated with working with children in a church setting including on outings and residentials. We will look at how to write, implement and review a Risk Assessment.

Validating DBS Checks

Friday 21st November at 7.15pm at Church House, Full Street, Derby DE1 3DR

This 2 ¼ hour course is available for anyone involved in recruiting volunteers or paid workers who require a Disclosure and Barring check. The content of the course will include who needs to complete the DBS form and highlight the most common errors and mistakes that incur a delay in the processing of the form. The course will also cover some background information about how and why checks are completed.

Basic Recruitment and Safeguarding

This 2 ¼ hour course is available for anyone involved in recruiting volunteers or paid workers who require a Disclosure and barring check. The content of the course will include who needs to complete the DBS form and will also cover the Church of England Safer Recruitment policy issued in June 2013.

Managing Offenders

Thursday 11th December at 7.15pm at Church House, Full Street, Derby DE1 3DR

This 2 ¼ hour course is by invitation only and introduces those who will supervise or accompany offenders as they assist them to integrate into parish life.

CEOP - Online Safety Thinkuknow Introduction Course

Thursday 22nd January at 7.15 at Church House, Full Street, Derby DE1 3DR

This course:

•Provides an overview of CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection)

•Introduces new technologies and how young people use them

•Highlights some of the risks associated with these online environments

•Introduces the Diocesan e-safety policy.

It is run by CEOP-trained Ambassadors. On completion you will be given access to the Thinkuknow presentation for 11 to 16s and two further films for this age group. Alternatively, you may be interested in the e-learning programme Keeping Children Safe Online which will also provide you with access to these additional resources.

This course is aimed at professionals who work with children and young people, such as:

• Teachers, clergy, Child or Adult Protection Co-coordinators.

• Youth and Children’s leaders

Domestic Violence

Thursday 26th February at 7.15pmat St Thomas Centre, Brampton, Chesterfield S40 3AW

This 2 hour course is required for all clergy, licensed readers and paid youth and family workers. The course will also be available for anyone working with children and vulnerable adults who wish to learn more about this subject area. Through the use of case studies the course will identify some of the more significant signs of domestic violence and the impact that this can have on adults and children, and how to respond appropriately as a church.

Dealing with Conflict Resolution and Challenge

Tuesday 17th March at Church House, Full Street, Derby, DE1 3DR

This 2 ¼ hour course is required for clergy and licensed readers, and is available for anyone leading children or adults work on a paid or voluntary basis. The course will include advice on how to respond in conflict situations and how to challenge inappropriate behaviour in a productive, non-oppressive manner. Case studies will include inappropriate behaviour from both colleagues and children or adults in the groups

Evening courses are at 7pm for a 7.15pm start and finish by 9.30pm

Afternoon courses are at 2pm for a 2.15pm start and finish by 4.30pm
