Genocide Research Presentation

“For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” -Elie Wiesel

Description: Students read Night by Elie Wiesel as class novel, in order to gain awareness of the atrocities of the Holocaust during World War II. It is necessary to educate each generation regarding not just this horrific act of genocide, but of many instances of genocide in our history in order to understand that as long as people remain silent and/or ignorant, the vicious cycle of history will only continue to repeat.

Objective: Students will extend their knowledge of genocide beyond the Holocaust. Students will use effective research methods and document sources according to MLA.

Directions: In groups, you will be assigned an incident of genocide that has occurred in history. Your job is to research the genocide and prepare and present a research project in the form of a group research paper or an informative slide show according to the following criteria:

Part 1: Title slide, then introduction, including the country, the time period, the group of people who perpetrated the genocide and the people who were the victims

Part 2: An overview of “What is Genocide?”

Part 3: The historical, cultural, and political events that led up to this genocide

Part 4: The tipping point that caused this genocide to start

Part 5: The means by which this genocide was carried out

Part 6: The story of a survivor of this genocide

Part 7: The aftermath: How this genocide ultimately came to an end and the total number of casualties/deaths; or, if this genocide is still going on, how aware the world is of the issue and the actions being taken to end it

Part 8: Conclusion/call to action about genocide; may include a reference/connection to Night by Elie Wiesel

Final Part: Works Cited page

Each member should take on the responsibility of at least one of Parts 3-8. Everyone will help with Part 1 and 2 and the Works Cited page. Each part needs to be either written/typed, or created as a PowerPoint or Google Slides—however many it takes to cover the information assigned, but no longer than three to four typed pages or 15-20 slides for each part. Remember that the slides should use few words per slide, and rely on the additional narration that the presenter will share with the group. The parts should then be combined into one cohesive research paper or slide show presentation which may use images, maps, graphs, etc. The entire presentation must be error free and the information gathered from websites must be paraphrased (or use quotations for direct quotes) and cited according to MLA format. You may use web-based sources and/or written reference materials in the library. For this assignment, please do NOT use Wikipedia as a source.
