Safeguarding report for Durham Post, Summer 2017

Please do keep checking the safeguarding section of the county website, because I add information there on a regular basis: the link is https://www.durhamscouts.org.uk/for-members/safeguarding/

Over the last few months I’ve posted the following:

Anti-Bullying resources
As you may be aware the Anti-Bullying resources have been taken out of print and new resources will be released in October ahead of Anti-Bullying Week in November. If you have ideas or suggestions for the new resources please email the safeguarding department at HQ with your thoughts. In the interim you can find alternative resources at http://www.antibullyingpro.com

As a result of Safer Internet Day 2017, the Web We Want and ENABLE projects have joined forces against bullying and launched a new resource for children and young people: "My well-being and yours: Respect begins with me!". This new resource is a compilation of exercises discussing topics such as cyberbullying, online radicalisation and hate speech. Within twelve pages, children and young people are able to carry out a variety of self-assessments as well as engage in interactive group work with their classmates and friends. Although this is aimed at teachers and covers some areas which are not particularly relevant, you may find some useful activities in it to use with your young people. Safer Internet Day 2018 will be on Tuesday 6th Feb

Blue Whale Game

And finally, you will probably have read the warnings about the Blue Whale suicide game which supposedly started in Russia; this was quickly identified as fake, but not before warnings had gone out to schools and other organisations working with young people. An article detailing the true situation can be found at http://tinyurl.com/mw8827w

Training

If any districts have leaders who need to complete the mandatory safeguarding training face-to-face, please let me know and I will arrange to come in and deliver a session. Please remember that this is for experienced leaders and also that if leaders completed the on-line version last time around, they need to complete the face-to-face version this time.
