SAFE WORK INSTRUCTION

Electrical Welding

/ Eye Protection MUST be worn / / Wear safety shoes
/ Wear gloves / / Ensure enough space / work area clear of tripping hazards
/ Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery and restrain long hair /
Preparation
·  Student to not use machine unless instructed by a qualified staff member.
·  Operators to receive instruction in safe operation
·  Ensure enough space / work area clear of tripping hazards
Use
·  Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect equipment
·  Prevent fire – do not weld near flammable / combustible materials / containers
·  Fire preparation – have extinguishers / water / sand nearby
·  Ensure the welding gun / holder and work leads are in good condition
·  Ensure gloves are dry and free from holes to avoid electric shocks
·  Keep the welding equipment, work piece and work area dry to avoid electric shocks
·  Ensure machine is correctly set up for current, voltage, wire feed and gas flow
·  Never leave the welder running unattended
·  Ensure adequate ventilation / fume extraction
·  Ensure other people are protected from flashes by closing curtain to welding bay or erecting screens
·  Connect to correct electrical supply, ensure work piece adequately grounded
·  Keep work area clean and tidy at all times (before, during and after work)
·  Wash hands before eating drinking smoking
Adjustment / Maintenance
·  Machines must be isolated from electrical source when being cleaned, maintained or repaired
·  Regular preventive maintenance and cleaning to occur

Note: This Safe work Instruction must be reviewed a) after any accident or incident;
b) when training new staff;
c) if adopted by new work group;
d) if equipment, substances or processes change or
e) within 12 months of date of issue.
