Ski/Snowboard Lessons - Information for Parents

1. FORMS and PAYMENT

Please complete the following forms (first three pages) in the Ski/Snowboard Club Packet:

·  Scholar Information Form

·  NWA Liability Release Form

·  Sundance Rental Form (if renting equipment from Sundance)

·  Sundance Release and Indemnity Form - online

Total your cost for lessons and, if desired, rentals. Completed forms and payment are due by 12:00 pm on Tue., Dec. 19, 2017 in the school office. Payment can be made by check (made out to "NWA Parent Organization"), money order, or cash - but please label your payment with your scholar’s name. All checks will be cashed by the Parent Organization Treasurer in the first week of January. Failure to pay by the deadline means your child will not be included in Ski/Snowboard Club. Please remember that there are no refunds or make-ups for missed lessons.

2. EQUIPMENT
Equipment rentals from Sundance include skis and boots for skiers; a snowboard and boots are included for snowboarders. Helmet rentals are an additional cost. Scholars who are renting equipment from Sundance will be measured by a Sundance rep who will come to the school during the week of Jan. 3. 2018. Typically, scholars are called to the office and the measurement is done in minutes. Scholars who miss this measurement can be measured at Sundance just before their first lesson - I don't recommend this, though: it's stressful on everyone and can make your child late to lessons.

Scholars who are using personal equipment or renting from another shop can bring their equipment to school with them on Ski/Snowboard Lesson days; they must keep equipment in their classrooms as the office will not store their equipment. Or, parents can bring personal equipment

3. CLOTHING
Below are some guidelines on how to dress your child for skiing/boarding;

TOP:
·  thin, long-sleeved shirt or long underwear top
·  medium-weight top (fleece or wool)
·  warm jacket (preferably windproof) / BOTTOM:
·  long underwear bottoms or fleece leggings/pants
·  snowpants
·  warm socks (wool or synthetic, no cotton)
·  boots or shoes (nothing special; they will be traded for insulated ski/snowboard boots)
ACCESSORIES:
·  warm gloves (preferably waterproof/windproof)
·  helmet or warm hat (rental helmets are insulated) / OPTIONAL:
·  scarf, neck gaiter, or balaclava (to keep neck and face warm)
·  goggles (to keep snow/wind out of eyes)

Remember that we will be skiing at night, which is colder than daytime skiing. Please, please, get the socks and gloves right. Multiple layers of cotton socks will still result in icy cold feet. Snowboarders spend a lot of time crashing on their hands - and soaking wet gloves don't dry out during dinner. Ski/Snowboard Club is a lot more fun for everyone when you're not thawing out the frostbitten hands and feet of a sobbing child with a hairdryer in the lodge.

4. CARPOOL
In the past, I have organized a carpool to take all scholars to/from Sundance Resort. Due to the change in lesson dates and my own personal circumstances, I cannot arrange a weekly carpool. This year, parents will be responsible for getting their children to/from lessons at Sundance Resort, arranging their own carpools, if necessary. This year's lessons are half an hour later, which means that parents can pick up their children from NWA carpool and go directly to Sundance. However, parents may still check out their children from school early for Ski/Snowboard Club. As always, time spent volunteering with Ski/Snowboard Club counts toward the 20 volunteer hours required per year for each family.
5. ARRIVING AT SUNDANCE
Click for Trail Map. It takes about 15-20 minutes to drive up the canyon to Sundance. Parking attendants will instruct you where to park. The lower parking lot is immediately next to the Creekside Building; the overflow parking lot is farther away. If you must park in overflow parking, you will take a shuttle bus down to the Creekside Building. Shuttles arrive every few minutes.
Rental equipment is provided by Sundance Mountain Outfitters, located on the lower level of the Creekside Building. If your child is renting equipment from Sundance, the equipment will be stored at Sundance. The outfitters will keep a record of the equipment needed and will have it available and labeled with a sticker with your child's name. Skiers will receive a helmet (if rented), skis, and boots. Snowboarders will receive a helmet (if rented), a snowboard, and boots. The skis, boards, and helmets will be on a rack just outside the doors of the rental shop. The boots will be on a rolling rack in a cabinet just outside the doors of the rental shop.

Parents, make sure your child has received the correct equipment and help get equipment on, if necessary. Scholars will change their footwear for ski/snowboard boots from a designated cabinet; their personal footwear can be stored in the same cabinet free of charge. If any changes are needed to equipment (i.e., boots too small, helmet missing, etc), go inside the rental shop and ask the outfitters for help. (And make sure any corrections go on the rental agreement so you aren't fixing the same problem next time!) Scholars will use the equipment for lessons and free skiing time; but equipment must be turned back in to Sundance that night.
Parents, it is not a bad idea to have your child use the bathroom/get a drink/eat a snack before lessons begin. Restrooms/fountains are also on the lower level of the Creekside Building.
Lessons begin promptly at 4:30 pm; instructors meet their classes in the area by Ray's Ski Lift (when facing the lift, ski classes are on the right and board classes are on the left). Parents need to help children find their class; there are numbered signs that correspond to the ability level selected. Each instructor has a class list and will check that the child has appeared for class. Classes are usually 6-10 students per class. At the beginning of each lesson, your child will be given a lift pass to attach to a zipper on his/her jacket; this pass will allow the child to ride the ski lift and ski/snowboard for the night of that lesson. The lift pass is valid only on the night of that lesson; a new pass will be issued at the beginning of each lesson, so old lift passes should be removed.

Do not be late for lessons! Instructors will not wait more than five minutes after the lesson start time before they begin getting on the ski lift to start their classes. Children that are late for a lesson usually have to wait for their class to come down the mountain/get on the lift again - and that can mean a cold, boring 30 minute wait by the Ski Lift.
Once your kids are in lessons, you can ski! Or board! Or chill out! At each lesson, Sundance gives me three adult night lift passes (valid for that night only). We also have access to six corporate passes, thanks to a generous parent. Parents who would like a free pass must let me know in advance; if we have more interested parents than passes, I will make sure they are fairly distributed. Parents who do not receive a free lift pass may purchase a night lift pass; with a coupon from sundanceresort.com, this will cost about $30. Parents who do not ski/snowboard usually relax in the various Sundance buildings. Whatever you choose, parents should pick up their children at 6:30 pm in the area by Ray's Ski Lift.
6. POST-DINNER FREE SKIING
In the past, I have organized post-dinner free skiing groups; I will not be able to arrange those this year. The lift pass that your child will receive at lessons is valid until 9:00 pm, but understand that Sundance instructors will not be skiing/boarding with your child. Your child will ski/board with you or the buddy/adult that you arrange. Younger children or brand-new skiers/boarders may want to go home immediately after lessons or may only stay for an extra run or two. Older children or experienced skiers/boarders may stay until the resort closes - it's up to you.

7. FOOD
Because we leave immediately after school, I pack a small snack for my child to eat during the drive to Sundance. We usually eat dinner when lessons conclude at 6:30 pm. Kids that bring bagged dinners can eat in the sitting area of the Village Building or at the Creekside Cafe. Dinner should be ready-to-eat and should include something for your child to drink.
Food is also available for purchase from Sundance at the Creekside Cafe, the Deli, or the Foundry Grill (Kids Menu); look at the menus online to decide how much money to send with your child ($10-$15 is a good estimate).

8. GOING HOME

Drop off rental equipment at Sundance Mountain Outfitters and have a safe drive home!
