Community Profile
The community that is being profiled is Lynn, Massachusetts. This is a large city north of Boston with a population over 90,000. This large community is where I call home. This community is comprised of many nationalities and very ethnic based, with a strong Hispanic and Greek communities within. Outsiders might paint a negative picture of this community but the majority of residents would say otherwise.
Lynn is made of many types of people. This community has above average poverty line, therefore creating a population of homeless and poor people. Majority of population is the working middle class. Due to the large Greek community within there is a lot of sub shops those residents own within. Because of the close proximity to Boston portion of the community commutes to Boston everyday for work. Lynn has a business district located in the downtown area, which generates a lot of revenue and job opportunities for the city. Members of the community typically interact at the local festivities. One of the larger festivals is the Greek festival that is held on Labor Day weekend and spans three days which draws a lot of residents. There is a portion of beach that has a long jogging path and park areas, which attracts residents as well. Because of the multinational population of this community there is many grocery stores that caters to all the different ethnic backgrounds and tends to act as gathering areas for the locals. The city hall has a large theater style auditorium that hosts many events for the community, ranging from big name touring acts to local dance recitals.
It is the community’s responsibility to keep the beach area and parks clean of trash and debris. It is the Greek residents that volunteer their time and effort to run the Greek Festival. The community has ethical obligations as well. These including respecting neighbors and outsiders that chose to travel through the city or use the cities resources. Beside ethical obligations, there are the financial obligations. These include paying taxes, fees or fines set forth by the city. Being socially responsible within the community means going above and beyond to give back to the community. This includes having a “green” mindset, using fewer resources and being conservative about the use of resources. Giving back to the community in terms of donated time and even monetary means is another means of being socially responsible.
